I'm looking at buying a Grestch g5122 guitar. It says they are made here in Korea. In the US and Canada they list for about $699.

Is it possible to get one cheaper here?

If the guitar has a western brand name on it you are probably going to pay more for it in Korea than you would in the US or Canada--even if it was made in Korea.

Off-brand Korean made guitars are cheaper though, like Cort for example.

But yeah don't plan on saving money on a guitar by buying it in Korea. It's kind of like how a new Hyundai Sonata costs like $25,000 in the U.S. and $50,000 in Korea. The domestic market is totally different from the export market because it is sheltered from competition by tariffs.

This is mostly right. However, on occassion, I find that pushing hard for the "Best price" gets me pretty close when I consider shipping, taxes I might pay stateside, possible damage in shipping, and setup. Don't forget that every guitar has it's own feel and mailording does not account for that.
I just bought a Cort 5 string with Bartolini pickups and hipshot tuners for less than I could USA e-bay it when the exchange was considered. In years past I woulda laughed at a Cort. I'm not laughing so loudly now. I love my bass.

Just adding that I agree every guitar has a different feel.........although Fender have got pretty close to getting a consistent feel on their mainstream guitars.....

It's best to go to Nakwon or any guitar store and walk around for a few hours trying out as many guitars as possible....

....the one you're meant to be with will call out to you.......deep, man......

When I first came here I got a Korean made Epiphone Les Paul Custom for MUCH cheaper than it was going for in the UK at the time. Have a look around Nakwon and don't be afraid to haggle for a discount if paying in cash.

go to g-cat in nagwon, they sell mik and mic gretsches. no, mostly mik stuff here is more expensive, because they can do it. In the US, samsung computers are largely cheap, but not here. Wow, that xnote...man, pricey

buy used anyway, go to MULE.co.kr with a Korean friend and look.

Sometimes you might get lucky and find a factory 2nd, or an axe falling off of the truck~ but in general, you will pay more here than you would in the USA. Haggle hard. Also try used guitars over in Shindang Market.

BTW, They have some nice Gretches and I believe they are made around Pusan. Good luck to you.

Why buy new? Keep your eye on the forums here, look on craigslist and ask around a lot. it seems as though every other esl teacher in korea bought a guitar and there are more second hand ones for sale than you can shake a stick at.

i actually lucked out and had a student give me one. it wasn't the best, but it got me through the year in korea.

I'm gonna build an electric soon. It would technically be "made in Korea". Anyone interested?

On the topic of Nakwon, does anyone know if it is open this week?
I'm interested in a gretsch too.
