Tried search function but couldn't get an answer. My elementary school would like me to do extra after school classes.

I currently do 19 regular classes and would get overtime after 22 classes a week. I'd like to hear other peoples experiences doing after school classes. What do you recommend I do? i.e.- textbooks and how many classes should I ask to do a week?

Thanks

Start with 5 first, which brings you to 24 hrs/week. If you can handle more, then ask for more. Try not to teach more than 30 hrs/week because you might get burned out, then again to each their own. However, I'm pretty sure they'll tell you how many classes you can teach since it depends on the budget they have. Books: try English Land, English Time or Let's Go.

You make up your own curriculum.
Take 3 classes to make your week total to 22.
Treat it like an extra-curricular activity, like a chess club or a football team. Students are mostly just waiting to go home (or to their next hagwon). If that sounds like baby-sitting... football coaches in US High schools, are they teachers?

Ask a lot of questions before you take these classes. How many students are in each class? You do not want a large class of over 25 students, trust me on this one. Do you get a co-teacher (you likely won't). What are the students' levels? Also check your contract to see if it defines how many minutes are in a "teaching hour". My contract "conveniently" left that part out.

I don't recommend taking more than 4 overtime classes per week. I have 6 and it's too much. Then again, I have 21 regular classes per week, not 19.

I believe if you're teaching after 5:00 PM you are entitled to overtime pay even if you're teaching less than 22 hours per week.

As for curriculum, you'll mostly end up doing games and/or projects. Teach about topics that interest the students. I recommend always having a ready stash of candy and/or other prizes for the games.

Good luck!

I only teach 17 hours p/w (max), so 'm interested if this is correct. My POE only gives 20,000 won for 1.40 hours teaching (4.30-6.10pm) at another school. They don't pay travelling expences (1.5-2 hour commute to and from the school/home) either.

Sounds like you'll do the first 3 classes for no OT, so if you do 5 extra you only get paid for 2 which isn't worth it.

Good point! And I don't know if I'll get paid money per student who signs up or just 20,000 per extra class. Thanks for all the replies!

If you do 19 and go to school 5 days, then you aren't teaching that many classes. If you refuse to do overtime hours, it will not only look bad but they will reschedule things so you teach more and get your 22 classes.

I did the overtime thing and was scheduled for about 27 classes a week. Regardless if the class showed up or not, I still got paid. The trick here is to agree on a higher monthly salary instead of treating it like overtime.

There will be days classes will be canceled. Students will come and go, so you can do a lot of the same lessons over and over again.

Teaching after-school classes is very different from regular hours. Students have Taekwondo practice or piano lessons/soccer practice. They leave early and come late to class.

After two months my 5th and 6th grade classes stopped coming because they had to go to their hagwon for math. This meant a paid class (3 a week) for every one where students didn't show up. I just used that time to prepare lessons for the next day. The downside is you will get huge 1st and 2nd grade classes. Just stick it out a few times a week and you should get extra money.

Don't have them treat it like overtime hours. Make them raise your monthly salary instead. As long as you are there for the scheduled hours, they need to pay you.
