I heard it's a pretty amazing place and I'm planning on trekking there when Korea is all said and done. I know nothing about it besides it being landlocked and Hank Hill's neighbor was from Laos. My friend is there now. The last I heard or seen of him was a video of him riding in the back of a pickup truck on a dirt road and a quick glimpse of some fellow traveler holding an assault rifle (probably fake).
What did you think of Laos?
Where should I go? Why?
What should I do? Why?
How long did you stay?
Sorry these sound like interview questions, but I like to get straight to the point.
Thanks! |

My favorite place in Southeast Asia. Very, very chill. Little in the way of police. Locals who are neither pushy nor dishonest. Great beer. Little in the way of police enforcement. Very little prostitution. Beautiful scenery. Great baguettes. Cheap French food. A bomb a** river. Towns that are essentially untouched by the Western world.
Something I suggest doing that I didn't get to do: buy a boat from the guy who owns Sunset Bar in Louangphrabang and take it all the way down to Vientiane. $300 for the boat, which you can definitely resell for something downstream.
The best advice I can give for Laos is to travel light, as a lot of the things you'll want to do won't be within your grasp if you've got a lot of crap with you (which I did when I was there, as I was two months in). |

Umm, what kind of boat? That sounds very dangerous. |

One of the little three person deals with a lawnmower engine on the back that the locals use. What's dangerous? The Mekong is mighty slow in Laos. |

Just think one would probably need some experience, docking it and everything. |

Docking it? It's basically a canoe. You beach it as best you can and tie it up. |

laos is the most boring country Ive ever been. Nothing to do. Most people go and experience the local culture by rafting down the river with a bunch of other westerners. There are also some temples. Not enough prostitutes. |
