Do you or have you ever thought about teaching a course online? Either where you work or on your own?
I've done this a lot, either through moodle/blackboard or social networking sites/blogs. It is great , giving Ss access outside of the class and can also be convenient and more effective (in terms of organizing delivery and curriculum).
The problem is that many small schools or even large ones, don't have a place set up for teachers. However, there is a solution.
I've set up a full on LMS with all you will need to deliver a course either publicly or privately. http://eflclassroom.com/efront I've test it out over 3 months and today launched it bug free. Forums/blogs/wikis/instant video rooms/gradebooks/messaging and a lot more. Even put up your own ads on the lessons. Put up videos to show etc....
Just sign up and use the demo to see how it would be from an administrator's perspective. Contact me as indicated and I'll add those privileges so you can build a course or courses for other teacher, to manage a group of teachers.
any comments/thoughts about what you use - appreciated and useful.

I don't want to sound like a *beep*, but when I read your post this is what my read:
I want to have access to a lot of great teaching material, but I don't have time to do it myself. I'll setup a LMS on my own site, and give permissions to those who want it. Perhaps someone might setup a good site that I can copy and use myself.
It isn't hard to setup blogs and wikis and there are tons of free, fast sites do so at. I use Moodle, which is free and open source. The amount of time it takes to put together a GREAT course online is massive, and thus why I can read your post as I do. |

Mr. Pink,
I think you should slow down with your accusations etc...
First, any course a person puts up there can be private. Totally private. Access is only to those students the teacher invites, no less, no more.
Second, I have more than enough content to last me several lifetimes. If you knew anything about me, the last thing you'd say would be I want to shaft teachers (which is what you are actually saying)
Third. I know a helluva lot about LMSs and putting up this or moodle and having the ability to debug, service and help others using it (as an admin) is anything but "easy".
Who set up your moodle? Which server does it run on? How many databases does it provide? Who tweaks and works at providing/installing the plug ins? How did you install your moodle? I've done a number and it is a good few days work. Some servers do provide moodle as a package but there is a lot of other work involved.
Blogs and wikis are nothing like this kind of LMS. There are about 20 teachers teaching on EFL Classroom 2.0. They remain private and invisible to others. But they don't have what this provides. \
With this you get free video conferencing, gradeboards, grading system, report cards, scorm quizzes and quiz makers etc... there is a lot more.
I set this up because there are many teachers whose institution or school board just doesn't provide anything like this. This gives them the ability to teach their students in a secure, private environment. Further, motivated teachers can teach online, meet and chat with students there and even arrange for course payment and instant printable certificates.
I'm doing this because I can. Hundreds of teachers used our atutor over the last two years (another kind of LMS). I switched, because eFront is doing a great job. CMS/LMS is where open source is really at par or superior than paid versions (like eCollege, Blackboard, HotChalk etc....)
Anyways, I think you were a little bit quick off your mark. Again, slow down.

You are one hard working guy. I have had the same idea as you, and it's good to work with others and share material. Good for you and keep up the good work. |
