Do you carry a "love stick?"

One of the great things about teaching in Korea is that I am allowed, neigh encouraged, to bring a big stick into my classes.

Its just the thing to slam on the desk to wake up the students and put the fear of god in them. Very Happy

Of course I'd never, in a million years, actually hit them with it, but they don't know that.

p.s. one of the Korean teachers finally let me in on the secret of why they wrap their sticks in electric tape ... so that when they hit the students, it won't leave bruises. Shocked

Yep...fear and intimidation...great motivators. I guess that's why they are in practise in every fine educational institution. Rolling Eyes
Really, between this post and Crois's, I gotta wonder about some of you.
I guess if you can't get any respect by any other means, then you have to wield a stick.
Honestly, kinda pathetic.

I carry what I call an "attention stick." It's a longish plastic ruler. I only use it when my girls get a bit chirpy and I only hit my podium to get their attention. I use it primarily as a pointer to indicate the page the girls should be on and I have used it it to *lightly* tap the girls when they are sleeping in class. I have never ever ever hit my girls with it.

Sometimes I take into class, but I found if you do that all the time it eventually loses its 'uses'. Better off kepping it the office, and then making a drama out of getting it - they think its more serious if the stick has to be fetched. The best places to hit them are in the rib cage, across the backs of the legs, or just simply smash the cranium, although this can impare their learning during the rest of class. In general, try and apply the stick to areas that don't bruise easliy, or are easily hidden from parents and other peers. If you find the dicipline is still not working, I suggest changing the substance of the stick - I work this scale, in order of use:
1) Thin, short stick.
2) Thin stick, but quite long.
3) Bamboo stick (any length) .
4) Iron or lead bar.
5) A mace.

Anyone want to compare notes?

Attention Exclamation Attention Exclamation

This post is a "half-in-jest" post.

Sure ... I speak loudly and carry a big stick, (more than one actually, but that's another story just for the ladies) but its really more of an attention getting teaching prop than a corporal punishment tool.

sheesh ..... some people on this board need to lighten up and enjoy life and teaching more ....

life is just so damn interesting ....
