I have been looking around, here and other places and can't get a good grasp on Bali. I want to go there this Christmas with my girlfriend, but don't know what a good area there is. If anyone here has been to Bali, what area do you recomend? We want a small hotel near or on the beach, a fishing trip and relaxing. Every web-site I look at promises everything. Any experiences there? |

Bali is nice. I wasn't as impressed as everyone else, but it was ok. If you want nightlife, stay in Kuta. That's where we stayed and I think it is why we didn't like it much. That's also the best area to learn to surf, which was super fun. Most of the hotels are very close to the beach. Everything was on this one main street. |

I would say avoid Kuta entirely unless you're really itching to go clubbing. Even if you want to go clubbing, you're better off finding something a place in Legian or Seminyak to stay, it's significantly more upscale and not crawling with eighteen year old Aussies with hookers on their arms. Even if you want to go to the big clubs in Kuta, it's only about three or four dollars to take a taxi there from the Seminyak area. The beach is also nicer up there, and less overrun.
You'd do well to avoid that conflagration entirely though. Spend a couple days in Ubud chilling in the rice paddies, or hire a car to take you down to Padang Padang or Blue Point in the Bukit.
If you don't mind a bit more expense and travel time, you'd do very well to head over to the Gilis for a couple nights. Pristine, quiet little islands with no motorized transport allowed. A couple hours away from Bali by boat, but well worth the trek. |
