If there's one thing I've learned about living in Seoul vs. living on the outskirts of Busan, it's that foreigners here don't at all like mixing with other foreigners. Seriously, I see people on the street and they just avert eye-contact. All of them. I realize that's a country vs city thing not exclusive to Seoul.

At any rate, if anyone is in or around GangseoGu... particularly Deungchon-dong/Gayang and wants to hang-out sometime, I've been in the area some time and can't get a friendly hello from anyone but my coworkers or the bar crowd in Hongdae/Itaewon.

Give a shout, it would be nice to get a drink without thinking about cab fare.

It's because they have paranoid fears of competition, which is absolutely ridiculous regarding their social status in this country. Or simply: losers don't want to hang out with losers. Make sense?

I've been in Korea for 2 years, I definitely 'get it.' I've seen enough people try to castrate their friends to make themselves look bigger that it also makes me feel confident in being anti-social, but ultimately that's extremely unhealthy and completely devalues my experience not just of Korea, but in Life and Youth in general.

This is your life, folks-- spend it well. I'm too old to be living every day like I'm still in HS. I had a great time in Busan mingling with people I might never have given face-time to anywhere else, but in Seoul you have to measure-up? Phhht.

I enjoy playfully teasing New Zealanders and pretending that British accents are awesome far too much to go around thinking that I'm too good to meet people on the street. If you're nice and know how to smile, give a shout. It's that simple. Life's too short to go around being jaded and petty.

That's likely exactly what the people who are avoiding eye contact with you are trying to do, because they want to spend their time on things they value, instead of using it to placate you. I doubt any of them wish you ill will, they just have better things to do with their time, and it's easier to just avoid contact than to risk having to brush off your unwanted social advances. You should be pleased that they saved you the embarrassment of that rejection.

I dont think that's the reason.

I'd say they are just socially awkward, one reason they didn't get a job in their home country Wink There's nothing wrong with networking, unless you want to stay with a hagwon job in South korea Smile

We're minority citizens in a foreign country, many of us thinking it's vacation.

I would counter that the experience isn't -that- valuable.

I've met exactly one person who's involved in PAC's back home and got divers' training here. The vast majority of us are watching the days go by.

It's good to have opinions.

An excellent way to rationalize away social rejection. I notice a lot of the whiners here abouts complaining that other foreigners won't give them the time of day have the same tendency. It's almost like it's a pattern.

True, and there's also nothing wrong with not networking. Not all of us are going to bother associating with you just because you might be useful in some menial sense later in life.

Argue all you like, but the fact remains that many of us simply don't want to interact with you (or people like you) on the street. We know nothing about you, and many of us are completely comfortable with our own social situations. What's the potential payoff? The possibility of hearing your wonderful jokes about New Zealanders for a year or two before your "vacation" ends and you vanish? No thanks.

I hope you find some people to befriend, but for your sake I also hope you can give up this tendency to insult and belittle people who aren't interested in being your friend.

Fox, I'm not good at quoting single parts. So all in once:

Like I said: if you want to stay with your bottom-line job that in my opinion compares to that of a migrant worker in China, then it's fine if you don't want to network. But networking is huge, even more so in Korea. And you should remember that there are some people on this forum who are not English teachers Wink it's up to you, but if you dont wanna stay at the bottom line of the food chain, then maybe you should look into networking. Just an advice

The idea that being an English teacher in Korea is comparable to being a migrant worker in China is borderline retarded. If "networking" means tolerating "gentlemen" like yourself saying such outright stupid things, I'm sorry, but I'll have to pass.
