I've recently moved into a new apartment and it comes with a kimchi fridge. Unfortunately, it permeates a kimchi smell in my kitchen and I hate it. I've tried defrosting it and washing it out thoroughly, but the smell won't leave.

Any suggestions on how I can win the fight againt kimchi odor?

They have these things that you hang in your kitchen sink drain to de-oderize....like bleach tablets. Maybe you could throw a few in your fridge? I mean these things are powerful, when we leave the drain uncovered and ith one of them inside you can smell it all over the apartment....Either way bleach of any kind might help.

or Maybe a good plug-in smelly thing?

There are fridge deodorants readily available in most supermarkets.
One of the most prominent brands is the 'Hippo' lineup, in this case product name would be '냄새먹는 하마 (냉장고용)'
See http://gmkt.kr/gHAE1r for product image.

My mom-in-law-to-be uses:

1. A bunch of the old larger ship-won coins. Not the new small ones.
2. A bowl of green tea leaves.

Aren't they meant to keep the kimchi smell in. You using it as your regular fridge or something? Toss it or pour soju on it.

Problem is I can't toss it because it is built in under my counter. Also, despite my best efforts to clean it out, I suspect the past tenants didn't exactly put a priority on cleaning, hence the state of the place when I moved in, hence the lovely odor. Now everything is clean, but the kimchi fridge has maintained its odor.

In any case, thanks for all the suggestions and I will try hamma and see if that works.

we keep charcoal in our fridge. that seems to take care of it as long as we change it every month or so.
