This thing is a random thing, so make of it what you will.

At the hotel I'm staying at, I've been chatty with a girl from Seoul (which she keeps referring to as "the capital" for some reason). I've discussed possible places I'm applying to for EPIK, and I drop mention of Daegu as a possibility. One thing she distinctly mentions (besides the weather) is that the girls there are prettier than in most parts of the country.

Let me preface the following by saying that, despite being a guy, women do not play into my decision-making for this application. (My favorite quote from an epic: "It's not for a woman's arse that I took this burden on!")

That said...is she right?

It is the supposed fashion capital, so maybe that's where she is basing her opinion. But you chances of hooking up decrease anywhere out of Seoul (not saying won't happen, only decrease) More open minded, less racism, bigger population. Besides, the 10s aren't exactly chasing after English teachers. And I am sure that an upstanding gentleman like yourself, the thought of finding a Korean girlfriend never crossed your mind as one of the perks of coming here.

Well, I can already predict how this will go, another Dave's pissing-match about cities. Everyone in Daegu will say it's true, everyone else will say it isn't. There's very little objectivity here in these kind of discussions.

That being said, whenever I meet people from other cities they always bring this up, so it's not something the girl just made up.

I find there are a lot of stunners in Daegu.

It is also the cosmetic surgery capital of the peninsular, so make of that what you will.

this is something that koreans have said for a long time. whether or not it's true i don't know, but the young and pretty flock to seoul regardless of where they are born.

The Daegu/prettiest women link probably has about the same rationale and validity as the claim that the mandu in a certain city is the absolute business, despite the fact that it tastes exactly the same as every other mandu.
Koreans buy into these claims without really thinking about it logically or assessing the facts. It's just something that everyone says, so it must be true.

its supposed to be something to do with the fact that daegu is in a basin so its winters are mild/summers cooler or something - so the girls have nice wh-aite skin and the apples here are korean-ly famous (im not sure what the girls do with them though).
That being said though - the few times ive been in seoul - the girls are definatley on the whole not noticably prettier than here in daegu.
They do wear dasiy dukes and mini skirts more - so I would say they are definitley more attractive.
Im not sure its the cosmetic capital is it?. Seoul has a whole district that is only plastic surgery.
Daegu has a clinic called 'all-for-skin'.
I know where id rather go...

Daegu WAS ONCE famous for its attractive women and apples, now its just apples.

As far as I know it was common for the men of Seoul to look for brides from Daegu a long time ago.

Its just a saying, I dont find it to be true. There are lookers in every city of the world, it just depends on your standards.

Every person (both guys and girls) is one light switch away from being a perfect 10.

Someone told me a story about why Daeju girls are hot a while ago but me forget whys.

The "Daegu girls are prettiest" thing is known across the country, but it's not really true (anymore). Besides, practically half of Korean women have been under the knife, so they all start to look rather spooky.

FYI, Daegu is the most conservative city in Daegu, and home to the Grand National Party (한나라당) - the Korean equivalent of the Tories/Republicans. If the idea of living in such a place has you running... you could try living in either Seoul (most cosmopolitan) or Gangwon (tons of artists there, due to it still retaining so much nature).

Oh, and Daegu has the yuckiest summer weather. It's basically a valley trapped between mountains on all four sides, so there is very little wind, and it gets quite humid.

This kind of reminds me of when I lived in Chengdu, China and everyone there swore up and down that Chengdu girls were the most beautiful girls in all of China.

Chengdu is also an inland city in a valley with mountains on all four sides, and cloudy all the time with humid/muggy summer weather. Much like Daegu.

The theory was that the weather there (specifically the lack of sunlight) gave the girls particularly pale skin, which made them more beautiful.

I thought it was a load of BS, personally, but notions like these tend to persist.
