I was planning to send home 2 or 3 boxes with some books and winter clothing in them to save on luggage for when I go home in August. I was wondering if I would be charged duty on them. Has anyone done this? What were your experiences? None of the stuff I am sending is new. If anyone has a link to government websites/guidlines I would appreciate it. |

Excellent information. For Americans you need to get the booklet Know before you go, ironically most easily found at customs stations when are arriving in the US. |

i did this a few times when moving between scotland and canada.
since I sent overland, and didn't insure the packages, I just declared a that the value of goods was under $50. And no one seemed to care that it was a huge, heavy box of stuff. Considering that $50=20 pounds, there is no way it could have actually been the right value, but i've never been questioned. I just write personal belongings, used clothes and books. |

I have sent tons of stuff back home by ship, jewelry, clothes, bookmarks, laquer boxes, brassworks etc..... Never been charged duty on any of it.
Living over here is different from visiting, after 3 months pretty much anything is duty free.
I didnt have to pay duty on my computer, xbox, mp3 player when I returned to Canada |
