Is 5 days in Beijing enough time? And is it worth the price of airfare and visa?

that's tons of time. You will even have enough to do some day trips.

I'd say 5 days is a perfect amount of time! I'm sure you could give or take a day or two depending on what you like, but I think it's good.

They closed that section of the wall. It's being developed into a golf resort.

Most of the hostels have overnight stays at the wall you can do. Quiet areas too. Friend of mine did it and it was apparently well worth it. They give you tents and gear and the trip there. I also liked Matianyu as a day trip. That part was pretty quiet and they had a cool tobaggon run from the mountain all the way down. Good times.

Five days is plenty of time. Temple of heaven, forbidden city within walking distance of each other. Wall trip takes a day. Shopping and nightlife arent much but good restaraunts. Take in the Beijing opera. Lots of good hostels.

I had no idea. That's a shame. I'm glad I got a chance to hike that stretch.
