PARIS The French Senate has voted overwhelmingly for a bill banning the burqa-style Islamic veil everywhere from post offices to streets, in a final step toward a making it law.
The Senate voted 246 to 1 Tuesday in favor of the bill, which has already passed in the lower chamber, the National Assembly. |
Are they trying to preserve French traditions of female lib or are they trying to make France inhospitable for muslims? |

I don't have the statistics at hand, but is it not true that the vast majority of Muslims in France don't wear the veil anyway? If so, I think it's an example of hyperbole to suggest that France is making it inhospitable for Muslims.
I would say that majority-Muslim countries make it more difficult for non-Muslims than France is proposing to make it for Muslims too. The most populous Muslim country, Indonesia, has certainly made things tough for Christians at times, there are two theocracies - Iran and Saudi Arabia, and apostisy laws are a feature of most of the Muslim world. Again, it's a case of Muslims demanding more respect for their religion than they are prepared to extend to others when they are in the majority. |

I'm finding it difficult to comprehend how taking away a freedom ensures "gender equality and women's dignity." |

Does everyone have the right to go to work dressed as a clown? If you agree, then I concede that you are consistent. |

Yeah, well if the Muzzies want to live in a developed country, then they have to accept the rules. Pretty simple. I mean, can a chick go to a country like Saudi Arabia or Iran and wear a bikini in public? What's that, you say? No? Well, then why should these poor deluded Muzzie women have the right to wear that ridiculous veil? You want to live in France...adapt. You want to live in your lovely Middle East, then go back there. Pretty simple. |

As one pundit said, I'm not Islamophobic, I'm just Islamofedup. That just about describes where I am now. |

That deserves a thread all on its own. My mother, as it happens, heartily agrees with France on this one! |

Workplaces are private, and the employer should have the right to set certain dress standards. Public places are a different matter entirely, and, should you feel so compelled, you should have the right to walk outside dressed as a clown. From what I understand, the French are known to do just that.
(Assuming you believe the ban to be appropriate...) Should all make-up also be banned? If you agree, then I concede that you are consistent.
And, again, this ban has absolutely nothing to do with ensuring "gender equality and women's dignity." Many women choose to wear these veils and take pride in them as symbols of both their religious and cultural heritage, so creating a ban like this is nothing short of bigotry (or paranoia; it could go either way).

You're contention then is that the West should adopt the oppressive policies of the Middle East? I think I'll pass. |

I think the priorities are backwards, Western countries should stamp out any form of Sharia law first. Banning head scarfs seems like a lashing out of Muslims because they are so persistent in wanting to change our laws the way we live. |

Like forcing women to wear veils? Sure, I agree wholeheartedly. However, I can't help but laugh that France has gone to the opposite extreme by forcing women to not wear them. |

To me this head scarf banning is perhaps a way to deter Muslims from coming to France. I personally don't have a problem with head scarfs but trying to change our laws by introducing Sharia is unacceptable. In Britain there are over 90 Sharia courts. They only delve into small things like marriage, divorce, etc but there is a risk that these things can become bigger and take over one day. Muslims use the West's tolerance and aspects of multiculturalism against them by taking over their way of life slowly. |
