Some friends and I would like to see some fall leaves this year. We were looking at Seroksan, but the number of tourists visiting there is a bit daunting. Anybody have any other ideas for a great place to visit in Autumn? Ideally, we would like a beach location, for bonfires and other sonsense (hey I can dream can't I?)

I know this should probably be in the travel section, but, everybody loves fall right?

Seoraksan = overrated.

Go to kyeongju for less crowds, better food (the region Seoraksan is in has worst food in korea) and stunning Autumnal scenerey at bulguksa, folk village, Namsan Mountain range park etc...

For a nice beach I always reccomend Amnyeon-do. Very scenic, peaceful and golden sandy beaches (Koreans say the East coast is best, but they must love pebble beaches and water so hectic it's often off limits to bathers.)

Seoraksan shouldn't be "too" crowded if you don't go during the specified exact time that Koreans have deemed is the hour to see the leaves. We went last fall and it was busy, but not so over-crowded that we didn't enjoy ourselves.

While Seoraksan itself is a little overrated...it is still one of the nicer places in Korea, and the drive through Gangwon-do is nice, pretty much the closest to rural and unpopulated that you're going to find here.

Jiri Mountain National Park has spectacular paths.

Go to the Sanggyesa Temple and walk an hour up past it to the Bulpo Waterfall and it'll be worth every step.

I second this. The temple and surrounding area of gyeongju are stunning.

Yeah, Gyeongju is nice. The buddhist temple grotto on the cliff was really cool. Gyeongju was one of the few tourist attractions in Korea that I didn't find to be severely overrated.

Indeed, what you say of Anmyeondo is true, but it is also covered in pine trees making green the predominant autumnal colour.

go to one of the ski resorts.
They arent busy at the moment (for obvious reasons) but you can still take a gondola up into the mountains.
I went to muju last weekend and I swear - for 2 days I felt like i wasnt in korea.

I'm going to go the other way and say Gyeongju is overrated.

Some mounds of dirt. A fake pond. A temple. A small tower. I can't contain my excitement. Granted I went there in winter when it was pretty bleak.

Seoraksan is crowded because it's awesome. I was there last week, and while there were quite a lot of people there, I still had a great hike. BUT, you should be able to find some other hikes that are nice, too, like Chiaksan or Jirisan.
