Okay, I know that I should just deal but I've had a smartphone for too long to give it up easily.

I'm also on an E2, so I realize I'm going to get screwed and I acccept that.

What I need is a rundown on various prices/venders/phones/etc... so that I can minimize said screwing.

I know I can get the Optimus for around 745,000 and the Nexus one for around 699,000 (and the iPhone for 815,000).

Are there cheaper options?

What about the Motoroi? The Moto Glam?

I'll be getting my ARC soon and I need all the guidance I can get.

Same situation here....if possible I'd like to buy a GSM phone I can use back in the US after I finish teaching here.

Even if you pay for the phone upfront would you still need to have it registered to one of your Korean friends?

If you buy the phone straight out you're not on a contract, you'd just be month to month you don't need a Korean to help you do that.

From my understanding, no.

It is a quad band GSM phone which means you will be able to use those bands for 2G, but since T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 for 3G I believe you need both to use 3G on their network. AT&T uses 850/1900 but I "think" you only need one of these to use the 3G, but AT&T is migrating their 3G network to the more robust 850 band.


Galaxy S bands:

HSUPA 900/1900/2100 (3G Bands)
EDGE/GPRS 850/ 900/1800/1900 (2G Bands)

Compare to the Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile:

850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz; (2G Bands)
UMTS: Band I (2100);UMTS: Band IV (AWS);UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100) (3G Bands)

and the Samsung Captivate on AT&T:

GSM/GPRS: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz (2G Bands)
UMTS/HSDPA (850/900/1900/2100 MHz) (3G Bands)


This is all new things I have learned in the past couple days, so I am in no way an expert. Therefore, if I'm wrong someone please correct me.

I'm in the same situation too. I want a smartphone too but am on an E-2 visa(3 weeks into it). I have heard from the other foreigners in town that they have been herded against their will into buying second hand crappy phones which IMO is quite frankly disgusting. I want a phone that I can basically do anything with.

I live in the boonies so I go travelling on the weekends and want to have something that I can take anywhere with me and still be connected to the outside world. I want to get a phone that I can attach to a bike so I can hit the road and use google maps and an inbuilt GPS to make sure I dont get lost in a foreign land.

I really like the Desire and the Nexus one too.
