Hello all,

I am looking to apply to EPIK for Spring 2011 but currently have no teaching experience, just a bachelor's degree.

For that reason (and also the bump in pay), I am considering doing an online certification course, but I don't want to sign up for one and have to pay without knowing whether I will make it through the EPIK application process.

And yet, to submit the EPIK application, I would have to indicate whether or not I am taking a course.

At what point does an applicant have some assurance of having a job? Would they know after the telephone interview or do they have to wait to see if a contract shows up in the mailbox?

Would there be enough time after receiving confirmation for a job to go ahead and do the certification course before the contract starts?

Has anyone else been in this situation or can otherwise advise on the best route to take?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

I am in the same situation, but I don't think you have to write the course you're taking- just what you EXPECT your pay scale to be in January. Theoretically, if you were offered a position in December that would still give you almost two months to complete an online course.

So should I just indicate an expected increase in salary and leave Section 8-2 (TEFL/TESOL or CELTA CERTIFICATION) on the application blank?

What if I were to apply to SMOE? Wouldn't I want something filled out in that section then?

Your pay scale can be adjusted when you arrive in Korea if you have completed a certificate. List your current pay scale without a course. Until you actually have the credential, it's not appropriate to list it or ask for a salary based on it.

Applying early will help them make a decision early, but the timeline is at their discretion - you may not find out until Christmas whether you have been hired. Possibly later, depending on demand.
