haha... great response. i just thought i'd reach out to folk who may be on that fence... not knowing if it's worth staying here since many foreigners honestly seem like they couldn't care less... and we loose lots of really good people like this. folk who left simply because they had no network or didn't know how. sure... look at it from that point of view "THE GUY SEEMS LONELY" but i nearly left looong ago as well... and i'm here because a few good guys reached out and helped. which is what i'm doing now... c'm on it's a no-brainer!! thanks for the many PM's i've received allready, i'll be sure to reply to them as soon as i get a chance... meetings piling up right now, but come 18:00 or 20:00 i'll shoot all the responses out.
regards.

I'm in Bundang and I'm willing to help as well. If I hadn't met one particular friend during my first year, I would have run too. |

My tip is rather simple. If this is your first school, you will feel glued to it. I did. Then problems came up, like with any school (and this was in Japan), and a union there told me "____ school is NOT the only school out there, move on".
Your school is NOT the only school out there. When things go sour, MOVE ON.
They need you more than you need them, despite the crappy salary ranges. Stay when things are good, plan your exit when things are not addressed, and don't look back when you get your final pay.
Oh, I forgot, repeat cycle |

Can't PM as yet but feeling a bit isolated so was encouraged to read this post - thanks for your bit of outreach. Helps to know there are people out there! |

Great idea OP.
My PM box is also open to people who need help or advice.
I was in Korea 1997 - 2008 and visit it a couple times per year for my work since then.
You can pm or email me (my email is in the faq about experienced teachers helping others). |

I don't have 25 posts yet so I'll ask this here.
I've got a gyopo friend in who lives in Bundang and I was kind of hoping for my first contract that I could get a job there so he could help me ease into Korea. What can you tell me about it? I know all the stuff from wikipedia, but what is it really like? How far away is it from the hot spots? I know the Bundang line goes to Gangnam, but how long does it take? Does it feel like a chore living there? Is the market saturated there like it is in Seoul proper? Just give me an overview of what living there would be like, if you recommend it, upsides and downsides, what the is to do, where you would rather be, things like that. |

Not bad for Gangnam, but some "hot spots" are Itaewon and Hongdae which are further out (like 20-30 minutes).
Seoul is so big, it doesn't really matter though. Get a map out and locate Geumjeong station (or in your case Bokjeong station). Use a subway map to get the general idea of where it is. That is a good radius to the center of Seoul in my opinion. Any further out and you won't be able to take the subway back home at night.
If you are wondering about weekend excursions, you can take a bus fairly easily. |

Ha Ha. It's funny all the teachers who come here thinking that tough guy teacher act works. I'm basically an edutainer at my school. Walk by my class and you hear non stop langhter from the kids. There's also a new English teacher who looks like Lee Hyori and she's got the hots for me. It's just a matter of time before she's mine.
I know it's just a matter of time before Arirang TV offers me a job. |
