I went on vacation for 2 weeks and upon returning home, I found that I could not connect to the net.
There is a yellow warning sign over my network icon on the taskbar. It simply say "No Internet access".
Did all the usual stuff, ipconfig release/renew, powering the off the router, waiting, powering it on again. I tried connecting the internet directly to the computer. NOTHING.
So an SK tech came over yesterday and spent an hour running between my room and the basement. Couldn't speak a lick of English nor I much Korean so when he finally "solved" it and my net was running again, he just left.
An hour later, I run some torrents, internet loses connection again. Back to the yellow warning--sweet, huh?
The odd part is, Megaupload ran super slow at about 100kbps, but torrents remained unaffected during the hour that I regained web access.
Originally I had thought it was SK throttling my speeds (I had some speed issues right before I left for vacation), but now I'm not sure what the f*** it is.
It isn't the router because I can't get a connection going even when plugged directly from the wall into my computer.
When I tried running the Windows troubleshooter (I know, they're totally useless) just to see what it would come back with, it said something about my connection to the internet via router, network adaptor, being broken.
If anyone has a working solution to my problem, I will buy you a meal at Mercado--the best Brasilian steakhouse in Seoul. Seriously.
I was also suspecting that it might be the wiring of my apartment--maybe something got nicked or finally fell apart while I was away?
Anyway, I'm not sure where the problem is, but since I have a 96k won SK Broadband bill hanging over my head despite the fact that I havne't even been able to use the service, I'm considering just not paying it so they'll cancel my service and looking into either KT or Qook. I'll finally have English service.
Any idea whether it's the computer, the ISP, or the wiring?
A MEAL AT MERCADO BRASILIAN STEAKHOUSE IN APGU COULD BE YOURS! Or, well, any Seoul restaurant meal valued at 30k won, I suppose. Or... 30k won... |

I'd just keep calling the ISP engineers ( I use the word engineers in the broadest sense) out until they fix it right.
That should work. Can I have my steak dinner please? |

If I end up changing providers and my Inyernet does indeed start working again, I am guaranteeing you the dinner right now....
Guaranteed. |

Well eamo, it looks like I solved my problem with a simple router reset. I thought I'd done so already but I guess I didn't hold down the reset button long enough. To think the SK tech didn't even try it once...
I just held it down for about half a minute, and voila, back in business. Although I had to reset all my wireless info. |

Sometimes routers will only reset properly if you totally power off then on, BTW. |

Yeah, see, that's the thing. I powered my router off about 10 times. Each for about 30 seconds - 1 minute at a time in the hours that I was going through all the normal steps for connectivity problems.
After my internet was down again. The only things I did were to reset the TCP/IP stack and that didn't seem to do anything. In a fit of frustration I just held the reset button on my router while it was on for about 30 seconds. THEN, my internet started magically working again.
And also, there aren't any more of the MegaUpload speed problems I was encountering anymore. Speeds were back up to where they were when I first had internet installed in my apt.
I'm not 100% sure if it'd do me any good at all, but I'm thinking I might regularly reset my router every few months or so from now on.
Anyway, I'm just glad I'm connected again. So glad in fact, if you still want that steak dinner, it's still on the table, lol. |
