Interesting article on the Kimchee shortage.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/15/world/asia/15kimchi.html
I picture a man in a trench coat in a back alley secretly selling black-market kimchee. "I gots your kimchee right here. Your baechu. Your gagduggi. This is the best stuff, right here." |

'Brian, can you taste the difference in the kimchi, nowadays?'
me - 'No, Mi Sang. [Mod Edit]'
Koreans are not the only misinformed/full-of-themselves people on the planet. Many other nationalities never get past downtown in their little worlds. Who can blame 'em for having national pride? |

Yeah, this part was great.
The president of South Korea, Lee Myung-bak, has said that until the crisis eases he will eat only the cheap and inferior kind of cabbage the round-headed variety commonly found in Europe and the United States.

there have been reports of cabbage rustling in rural areas |
I can say with absolute certainty that's the first time I've heard the phrase "cabbage rustling."
Imagine having that on your record! |

On the flip side, while the quotes in the article are damn funny, the situation is not that funny for your average Korean family.
The cost of cabbage has risen a lot due to a bad harvest this year and like it or not, Gimchee is a staple of the Korean diet, much like milk and bread are back here in Canada.
A wild fluctuation in the price of milk or bread here would generate a lot of protest and anger.
Still, funny quotes and cabbage rustling sends quite the amusing mental image! |

It's not just Kimchi. ..
There was a piece in the NZ papers that said that over the last decade Korea has had the highest price increase among all OECD countries in regards to Supermarket prices. Something over a 48% increase in prices.
The reason it was in the NZ papers was that NZ has the second highest increase over the last decade among OECD countries |
