I had my visa interview last week. From what I read on the boards here, I expected the consular official to ask a few questions and be done with it. My experience was quite a bit different...

He started by spending the first 10 minutes asking me questions about myself and why I wanted to teach in Korea. Pretty standard stuff, though much more in depth than I had expected. He then signed my paperwork and asked me for a favor. He got out what looked like some classwork and had a bunch of sentences underlined with idioms he didn't understand like "a textbook case", "about face", and "rank and file". I then spent the next 20 minutes explaining about two dozen idioms to him in more simple terms so he could understand what they meant.

Did anyone else have an experience like this? I have to admit I enjoyed it quite a bit (I do love teaching), but he had already signed my paperwork so he wasn't testing me on my teaching skills... the visa guy was getting free English lessons from me. Is this what I should expect when I arrive in Korea?

Cheers,
Tactical Buddhist

Yes he was just getting a free English lesson from you, and don't be surprised if similar things happen to you in Korea, especially if you work in a large public school.

Yep. Don't sweat it, he's just doing what many, many Koreans will try to do with you as well. The only difference is that with them you don't have to oblige.

It didn't bother me, but it was weird. My interview started 15 minutes late, lasted a half an hour, and there were still 6-7 miguks waiting in the lobby for their interviews.

Time is of little/no importance here.

Shameful if that's what he was doing.
