| Does anyone else feel its ridiculously easy to put weight on here? I didnt see it at first, but started to notice it last month. At home I had a really active job and could eat whatever I wanted without having to worry too much. So that's obviously a factor, but I'm eating healthier here, and going to the gym a couple of times a week and still, have gained around 6kg! And its not going anywhere! It's so ruddy frustrating! |

It's an expat phenomenon known as 'Magic 8.'
A lot of expats put on 8 new Kilos when they live aborad.
Mostly result of adjustment stresses. |

| I usually lose weight when I relocate, have lived in other countries (with nicer food!) In the past and it wasnt an issue. Although this place does stress me the fook out, so you may be right! |

The cortisol inducing stress is what it be!
Get you some nightly yoga in!
I got a beginer's dvd and lost 2 inches on my waist in 2 weeks and became pretty darned zen. The best sleep afterwards too.
Sadly I busted my knee doing deadlifts, so now I can't do yoga so I'm on the booze instead. |

| I experienced the opposite. I lost half a stone (7 pounds) and I'm currently looking to buy a belt (that doesn't look feminine - surprisingly difficult to find). |

Bucheon bum: Its been done, well the rice anyway. I'm not going to cut out booze altogether, my situation isnt that severe! But I dont drink beer and just stick to the vodka tonics when I indulge.
Hotwire: Thats actually what I had been intending to do, just never got round to it, but you have inspired me and have downloaded a beginners class, going to get stuck in now. |

While the stereotypical Western diet certainly isn't the healthiest....it is a huge misnomer how healthy Korean food is for you. Korean food cooked at home is certainly pretty healthy, but restaurant food isn't.
Especially the food at school cafeterias....every other dish is breaded and fried or covered in sugar syrup to make the low-quality food taste good....not to mention the mysterious fat-filled meat discs. |

In my first 3 months I lost weight - enough weight that people started asking me if I was ok. I chalk it up to getting food poisoning from eating at a Sangyupsol restaurant in the second month and then being very gun shy after that.
In year two I gained it all back and then some mostly because of the damned ice cream specials at the store at the first floor of my building.
Year three I started eating better and working out more consistently and am in the best shape of my life. I achieved this even though I ate rice and drank import beer almost every day. Just saying! |

It's also a lot more delicious and varied than the standard crap restaurants have on offer. |

YES!
I gained 2 kg when I first got here just over a year ago. I managed to lose it at the gym, but I find I need to be more vigilant these days about my weight and figure.
This is especially odd considering just how much bacon/stuff cooked in bacon fat or butter I ate before coming. Not to mention, I used to eat like 4 or 5 slices of good (local hippie) pizza at a time like 3 years ago and didn't gain really back then (didn't lose and was on average 5 lbs/2kilos heavier, but didn't gain!)
Rice = caloric but unfulfilling compared to protein. |

Also factor in your age.
Sad but true that the old metabolism slows down after 25. |

| I down a minimum of one pizza every week by myself, don't go to the gym or anything and I've dropped pounds since I arrived in Korea. Also, heavy boozing like never before. |

I'm not saying we're all stressed out but some people lose wieght due to stress and some gain it.
Some people gain weight on carbs, some lose it etc...
We're all different. |
