I was an occasional reader of his most famous publication, which did what it did fairly well, though the soft-lensed, "high concept" pictorials veered a little into the kitschy at times. Like other porn publishers, he sometimes seemed to take himself a little too seriously, as if he had to prove to everyone that he really was a classy guy, despite working in what is generally regarded as the most disreputable field of media.
I watched an old interview with him on YouTube, and he was quite admant about distinguishing himself from Hugh Hefner, saying that he(Guccione) was driven by work and devotion to family, and didn't go in for the kind of round-the-clock party lifestyle that Hef was famous for.
I never saw Caligula until I came to Korea, so of course it was butchered by the censors beyond belief. Suffice to say, Guccione's own high estimation of this particular work(parts of which he actually directed) somewhat bolsters my earlier point about taking himself too seriously.
Anyway, cue the "Never thought I'd be writing this obituary" jokes.

It should be noted that, in addition to his flagship publication, Guccione also published Spin and Omni, among others.
Slate Magazine recently had an amusing article about the late 70s futurism that informed Omni. |
