........Munich vs Berlin. Where would you want to spend most of your time?

P.S - Please feel free to make general comments about German travel.

Thanks

would love to go to both. I went down the Rhine last summer and it was brilliant. Stayed over night in a castle, did a wine festival, Gutenberg museum, wandered around in some creepy old Churches, and chilled out in too many beer gardens. I would definitely recommend a German rail pass though for anyone who goes. The rail system there is fast, efficient, and fantastic.

Berlin is one of the most happening cities in the world, there is heaps to do, especially if you're a culture vulture.

Munich is very nice too, perhaps more "German" in some ways, it seems more traditional, and better day trips are on offer such as to the Bavarian Alps.

If you're going to travel to other cities, the cheapest option is using regional trains on the weekend, a special "weekend ticket" is available.

I lived in Bremen and a small village near Koblenz for a few months. The small villages and towns in central Germany are very nice, make sure you try out the local brewed in-house beers, I can still remember one beer I had.....

I enjoyed Cologne too, it has a remarkable dom (cathedral) that really dominates the skyline.

Hands down, Berlin is the place you have to go.

I would not go to places like Neuschwanstein or Rotenburg. Those places are overrun with a zillion stupid tourists taking pictures of everything.

munich - is a weekend city but the outskirts are outstanding ly beautiful (the bergen). Its also got daccau (first ever concentration camp)
Berlin is a 'capital city' - its got layers and you could keep yourself entertained there for years.
If i had to choose - Id go to Berlin.

I've spent several months in Berlin and it is my favorite European city. I've not been to Munchen but its easy to travel there. If you're looking to save money, the bus is much cheaper....trains in germany aren't as cheap as you'd always hope unless you find a special price online sometimes.

If you're in Berlin, you'll be riding the public transport. Depending on how long you are staying just buy a ticket for that amount of time. Its a hassle trying to buy a ticket before each ride and it cost more than 2 euro for a single one way ticket. I think there is a 1, 3 day pass or a week pass.

If you're in berlin, be sure to go outside of the city to Potsdam, this is where the old Prussian castles are...they are AMAZING.

If its ur first time im germany be sure to eat sausages, currywurst in Berlin, try the turkish doener etc etc.

berlin is really big and tons of do. if ur into art and museums go to the museum island and get a ticket for all 3. its worth it if ur into art or u can not spend any money or be cooped up in a building and just walk around and admire all of the wonderful architecture and historical places!

I just spent my summer in Berlin and got there right when the world cup championship started. it was amazing. berlin is my home away from home.

so im partial. go to berlin. it will not dissapoint!

Fantastic and brilliant country, so much to see and do. I loved Bavaria and the Black Forest. Germany has a quintessential, underlying European class to it. Cheap food, relatively speaking, great transport, sites that will take your breath away. World class!!

You'll enjoy both but Berlin is essential in my opinion. Visit Dresden as well if you have time.

Thanks for all the comments.

I'm leaning towards Munich but weill probably spend at least a couple of days in Berlin.

I'm a Canadian army brat who was born in Lahr and spent most of elementary school there. It is in the Badden-Wuttenburg region. Right next door to Bavaria.

munich = one of the most expensive cities in germany
berlin = more sights than in munich, also significantly cheaper and more multi cultural.

munich = close to switzerland and austria. both easily reachable by train. expensive tho
berlin = poland, czech republic, east germany are close. again, only a train ride away. countries are cheaper than switzerland and austria.

as far as the night life go. berlin is cheaper and has more social places to offer.
munich is more fashionable, snobby and expensive.

if you love snow and are going in the winter, then munich is the place to be. if not, then berlin should be it.

you have to be aware of the fact that munich and berlin are two completely different cities. its up to your preferences and wallet where you should be headed to.

im german and ive been to both cities multiple times. i dont like either of them. i prefer hamburg and cologne.
however, if you asked me where i want to go, id say berlin. just cuz theres more to do, to see and ppl are easier to get along with/ meet.

either way. bring enough money and have fun!

Hey,

I just booked flights from Bangkok to Frankfurt and Frankfurt back to Seoul with Etihad. It came to about E750. I thought that was pretty good seeing as how my one way ticket Dublin to Seoul with China Eastern cost over E900. Etihad is a quality airline too. I've used them before and they are now my benchmark.

I went to both last August. Berlin, hands down. Way cheaper and more fun. Munich has more day trips within striking distance though...Nuremberg, Dachau (OK, it's within Munich, but still kind of a day trip), and even Salzburg, Austria. - I didn't make the day trip to Potsdam from Berlin...I didn't want to lose a day in Berlin!

I would've skipped on Neuschwanstein(sp) if I could do it again.
