Today I had to wait for a student who showed up 1.5 hours late, and then she talked to the owner making me wait longer. It was worth it though.
The listening exercise for the day was on Bode's Law.
Most of this won't seem funny unless you hear it.

Professor: Yes, I divided all those numbers by 10 by putting in a decimal point. Now I'm going to write the names of the planets under the numbers.....
Male student: Is it the distance of the planets from the Sun?
Professor: Right. In astronomical units---not perfect, but tantalizingly close.

"tantalizingly close"?
The next one that came up was the professor's pronunciation of "Uranus". He pronounced it as "U rin us", not the comical "Your ___".
I thought about it for a minute. He kept saying "U rin us", which sounded funny. So, in my head I replaced it with the more familiar pronunciation and heard him say, "And look, Uranus fits in the next spot in the pattern pretty nicely."
After that, I completely lost it and the student was begging me to explain why I was laughing so hard.
Has anyone else come across this audio file? I would be happy to share if interested. If anyone has something similar, please share yourself. It's sure an entertaining way to finish the day. |
