Nice little city of about 300,000 that has adequate amenities including CGV and the big 3 department stores-Homeplus, Lotte, and EMart. Probably about 150 to 200 western teachers that are mostly pretty friendly. Adequate restaurant and bar area near Wonkwang University, which is a Buddhist run university with a pretty nice campus and pretty co-eds.

As small as it is, it also has a KTX stop, which is a HUGE plus. One can get up to Seoul in less than 2 hours, or down to Mokpo in about the same.

It snows about 7 to 10 times a winter, which was perfect for me.

Only 35 minutes from neighboring Jeonju, which is twice the size and offers some diversion.

I worked there my first year, left for the big city in my second, but returned to Iksan for my 3rd and final year. I'd go there again as I was comfortable there, but I would kind of like to check some other places too.

^^^ Also, now that I think about it, many teachers do stay for two or more years, and some even longer if that tells you anything. It is not a hell hole or anything!

Go to Iksan station. Across the street to the right is a world foods shop (Clove cigarettes!!!) That guy has an Indian restaurant about a block away with a killer buffet!

The name of the restaurant is Masala, but they don't really do the buffet anymore. They did however drop the price of entrees, so if you go with a few people and every one orders something different you can still mix and match for a fair price. At least that's what I did.

And you are right, the food is pretty good.

Maybe one of the few discouraging words I could say about Iksan is that there is not exactly a plethora of ethnic restaurants available, although they did just open a killer sushi restaurant called Sushi Tae - the owners speak English and used to have a restaurant in Texas. I highly recommend it!

I currently work and live in Iksan. It's a nice size city with everything you would need. However, if you are looking for more of a night life or a lot of things to do on weekends without having to travel, it probably isn't the city for you. If you prefer western food over korean food there aren't too many western retaurants. A couple good pasta places, a couple places to get good steak, but many pizza places including a Pizza Hut and Papa Johns. Like the others have said there is a KTX station here which makes travelling easy, buses also stop here and go all around. There's not much in the city for clothing shops (at least for my taste) so bring everything you like. If you have any questions pm me and I'd be happy to answer.

I am wondering if someone can cover part-time for 2-3 classes in Iksan in middle-late afternoons between 2:30 and 6pm in IKSAN. You have to be already in IKSAN. I have a medical emergency for something that the local hospital's can not treat or do not have the facilities to treat. I will be going to Seoul Teaching hospital for further workup on my medical problem. The kids are very kind. Please call me 010-7557-6026 if you only speak English. If you speak Korean call 063-838-9772 for more information. Thank you for your time.
