|
|
Do you think there are any Halloween costumes that are a definite no-no here in Korea? Maybe they're super disrespectful or offensive, or could cause a terrible misunderstanding.
I guess what I'm asking is... is it ok to dress up as a female North Korean soldier? How about Kim Jong-Il? A visor-wearing ajumma? Fan death (the Grim Reaper carrying a fan instead of a scythe)?
The costume would be for going out drinking/partying with other expats- I just don't want to get beaten up on the ride home or messed with if I'm asleep passed out.

The visor-sporting, permed hair-flowing, floral/mc hammer pants-and-blouse-wearing ajumma is so played out! Please take a pass on that clever costume! |

How about a guy-in-a-wheelchair-wearing-an-elevator costume? |

Probably want to avoid the second one pictured:

(can't find the original post on Dave's)
The adjumma thing is easy to put together, but very played out. Maybe funny in 2003, but been done hundreds of times since then, and been worn by every frat guy and tri-delt who refers to themselves as "waygooks." |

An 2MB mask with Mickey Mouse Ears would get the locals laughing.
The Mad Cow seems a bit old now.
I bet dressing up as an old hunched over cardboard collector would piss a few people off.
For the best reaction, just go ask yourself (assuming you are a white male) with a Korean girl as your date. Then kiss her in public. |

Don't do Andre Kim. While it's perfectly fine for Korean advertisers to use Pavarotti and Bob Ross lookalikes in their ads, dressing up like a spaceman and smearing your head with shoe polish is apparently taboo this year. |

Trying dressing up as a war ship with a torpedo sticking out the back. It would be original for this year.
Or just a North Korean torpedo would work. |

As another poster mentioned. Don't do the ajumma. It's not clever. |

If you don't like these ideas, there are a few more links at the bottom of the page.

And then I had a friend who complained about too many "sexy" costumes made of dental floss and glitter, so she and her friend decided to be dental floss and glitter. Dental floss was a white outfit with posterboard cut out and printed like a package of dental floss, while glitter was an 80's prom dress with spray glue and glitter all over it plus sparkly make-up and glitter hairspray. You could probably adapt this into some sort of K-pop girl if you were so inspired. It might be fun to capture that moment when K-girl begins to turn into an adjumma. Booty shorts and a sparkly visor? I'm not sure how it works, but it could be fun! |

Not to answer your question, but in line with the costume discussion:
My anti-costume husband utilizes "unique" (I don't know, these could be old jokes I never heard before) ways to explain his non-costume. Wearing his regular clothing he would tell people he is "premature ejaculation." Why? Because he just came in his jeans.
