Interesting about ways being tried to curb it, though it's stating the obvious when it talks about anonymity.

"Trolling, defined as the act of posting inflammatory, derogatory or provocative messages in public forums"

I don't think this is a very accurate way to define trolling.

I always thought trolling could be defined as:

a) being sincere, but posting your views in a place where your sincerity is inappropriate... where no reasonable person could say you're really adding anything to the debate, you're just expressing extremely contrary views to get reactions.

b) being insincere for the purpose of provocation, which is usually what people mean when they accuse someone of "trolling". For example, if somebody posted to Dave's to ask how to prepare a marijuana culture lesson for middle school students b/c it's a major part of American teen culture, it would probably be a funny troll (ok, that one's not provoking)... Oh, here's an example of an annoying troll... From time to time, I'm tempted to start a thread about how annoying it is that people bump into my oversized backpack on the subway (true, it's annoying)... but it would be trolling because it's kind of a trivial subject that I don't really care to discuss (my need to rant would be insincere), and the only reason why I'd bring it up is to provoke the backpack-haters.

-also... being insincere for fun, like the towel-snapping story. That was a great troll, however it made many people upset because they approached the story like a sincere event, and spent a lot of time giving the writer legal advice.

To me, internet trolling could be defined as:

Posts on public forums (or any publications on internet) serving the aim of getting inappropriate attention.

I always think of it in terms of fishing. Just dropping your lure and letting the forum carry it along until someone bites. Then setting the hook and slowly reeling them in.

I'm a horrible troll though. Funny enough I'm not that much of a fisherman either. My witty comments just get passed by like so many limp worms.

I've heard this towel-snapping thread mentioned a few times. Does it still exist?

The towel snap story was just one of the more recent ones in a long line of memorable posters with an agenda. Good stuff and very entertaining though, laughed and loved some of the funnier stuff over the years. Very Happy

Trolling is malevolent use of a forum to play around with, fool, attack, or generally cause harm to someone interacting on the forum. It's like a troll hiding under a bridge and running out to kill and eat unsuspecting children.

good article..

I think the next 10 years will see the 'withering away' of anonymous posting on most sites.. it is now becoming more usual to see posters show their true identity in 'comment is free' on the Guardian site.. (very rare for below-line commentators to do so up until pretty recently..)
The social networking sites have normalised it.
Anonymous forums have become vicious snake pits - little civility or good will. - As the article says ..invisibility removes accountability and moral consideration..
