Is it one year from the date of entry, or one year from the date of issue?

I believe the actual visa is only valid for 90 days from issue.

BUT, what I think you mean to ask is how long you can stay, as in your period of sojourn. That'll be on the visa, typically 1 year, and that starts on the day you enter the country. Beware that if you leave during the year to visit another country, you need to make sure you have a re-entry permit (also printed on visa) so that you don't accidentally cancel it by leaving on vacation.

It IS written on your Visa, but there is an end date on there. It's not 1 year from date of entry, it's one year from date of issuance. Just look on your visa in your passport, it will tell you.

My last visa, I entered the country a week after it was issued and had to get an extension of a week for my job.

Nope.

Your period of sojourn is for the length indicated on your visa (for convenience purposes) (1 year or 13 months).

If you are NOT American your visa will expire 90 days from date of issue. Your period of sojourn will be 1 year.

If you ARE American AND have a multi-entry visa it will expire 1 year from date of issue (meaning your sojourn is still good for 1 year from entry (as indicated by your ARC) but your re-entry privileges expire with the visa expiry date.

Not to sound ignorant or anything but... what does the "re-entry permit" in your passport look like? I have been trying to find out for months if I have the multi-entry visa or not... It does say "Entries: M" on my passport but when I got my ARC the Immigration office told me that they made a mistake but never told me what that was... hmmmm...

You're right, I think I misspoke. The period of sojurn is one year/13 months and THAT is what starts from the time of issuance. Every sticker i've gotten in my passport, the period of sojurn has started from the time it was issued and expired 1 year later. Would that be correct, or have I just had a fluke with every one of mine starting the same day it was issued?

Lexilooo, an "M" next to "Entries" does, in fact, indicate a multiple entry visa.

Okay, so looking at my visa right now, the issuance date was 12/02/2009. My entry date was 12/06/2009. I have a flight out of Incheon on 12/04/2010.

So I'll need to go to the immigration office and get my visa extended, right?

Read the WHOLE visa. There should be an expiration date next to the issue date. That's the last day you can be here. My last visa expired on a Monday and my flight was on Tuesday at 9:45 am. I had to go to immigration to get an "Extension til departure." 9 hours and 45 minutes of extension, for which I spend about 3 hours and 15 minutes at immigration to get.

NO.

READ YOUR ARC.

Your visa is largely irrelevant after your ARC is issued (other than perhaps your re-entry if you are American And have a multi-entry permit.)

Your REQUIRED "departure before" date is the date indicated on your ARC (your expiry date).

a) If you departure is BEFORE midnight on the date indicated on your ARC you are fine.

b) If your departure is AFTER your ARC expires you need an extension.
