|

For me it's on channel 56, but basically they are saying "Foreigners think fan death is a myth."
They were interviewing people from different countries saying that they didn't believe in it (and with all those "oooh" and "ahhhh" fake sounds they edit in).
Then they even showed the Wikipedia article talking about how it's an "urban legend" in Korea. They had several Korean doctors yapping about it, but it's all in Korean so I didn't get all of it.
Did anyone else watch this just now? |

most koreans I know don't really believe it. Yet still don't use fans inside with the window closed because well it makes them uncomfortable. The same way I know that opening an umbrella inside won't bring bad luck yet it makes me uncomfortable. Why? it's a superstition i know deep down that it's rubbish but still...
Sure some people believe it, but some of our superstitions are just as stupid, black cats, mirrors, salt, cracks in the pavement, not seeing the bride ... |

Yeah, but those superstitions are not on the level of dumbness as fan death. Most of those superstitions aren't really take seriously, but fan death IS taken seriously in Korea. Many Koreans actually believe it, despite all the evidence to the contrary. |

Air Circulation and Sudden death created by Negative air currents. The fan changes oxigen rich air into carbon dioxide contaminated air. This is not a sudden change but a metamorphic transition that causes positive air currents to be transformeded in negative air currents. Flatulence in air can and will contaminate the air. The typical male meat eating alcohol drinking male generates 2000 cubic metre's of what is best described as flatulence rich air. This is best described as the Post-Modernist condition as the relm of Semiotic discource. |

It's a keyboard shortcut that's been around since windows 95 at least, possibly 3.0 that's fallen out of popular usage and become the butt of lame jokes. |

Fan death is so dumb that it ranks up there with "kimchi cures Sars, AIDS" on the stupidity scale. It is so typical for Koreans to try to force an idea on fan death on people to make it seem that it is actually legit. I'm sure it offends their sensibilities that foreigners laugh at their stupid ideas. So, they'll lie and cover it up to make it seem like they have a case. Kind of how they'll lie and doctor things up about Takeshima to give them any kind of edge. What is truth to your typical Korean? They believe in their mythical "perfection." The bottom line is that I sleep with a fan on damn near every single night...for years...thousands of times. With doors and windows tightyl closed. I slept with one on last night. Still here. By Korean logic, I'm immortal. Fan death is just pure stupidity accepted as truth here. Ridiculous. |

How do you allow your umbrellas to dry? I kept mine open in the foyer back home. Now. I just leave it outside of my apartment door for an hour or so. |

I've been fairly lucky, but I use a cheap big rainbow umbrella, so if it is stolen, I'm only out 5 bucks. My smaller, emergency-always-in-bag umbrella dries near my welcome mat, inside the apartment.
So far, nobody's messed with it, though. |

Next Friday 13th have a black cat in your apt, break a mirror, have your best male friend dress up as a bride and the two of you dance around the apt in an Irish Jig to 'Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head' whilst opening and closing umbrellas.
Seriously, it will shake some knots loose in your head.
I did the same thing once but for other reasons than to cure me from superstition. |

I've met quite a few Koreans who profess to believe in fan death. An improbably large number in fact.

In my entire life, I've never met a single person who genuinely claims to believe in any of those superstitions except, perhaps, the one about seeing the bride, which I admit is silly but I feel is more acknowledged out of tradition than genuine fear. When I inform Koreans I often sleep with the fan on, on the other hand, I'm often told I'm lucky to be alive.
The Korean Government even has an official position on fan death:
Quote: |
If bodies are exposed to electric fans or air conditioners for too long, it causes [the] bodies to lose water and [causes] hypothermia. If directly in contact with [air current from] a fan, this could lead to death from [an] increase of carbon dioxide saturation concentration [sic] and decrease of oxygen concentration. The risks are higher for the elderly and patients with respiratory problems. From 2003 [to] 2005, a total of 20 cases were reported through the CISS involving asphyxiations caused by leaving electric fans and air conditioners on while sleeping. To prevent asphyxiation, timers should be set, wind direction should be rotated and doors should be left open. |
Imagine if the United States Government had an official advisory on avoiding cracks to ensure the continued well-being of your mother's back. |
