Howdy folks!

After nearly five years of service it looks like my laptop is set to play that great gig(abyte) in the sky. I was hoping to eke another year out of it, but that is seeming more and more unlikely.

The computer is generally slow and unstable (cleaning the disk registry didnt do much to help) and I am consistently receiving a "disk read error" upon start-up.

A couple of questions:

1) Have any of you reading this had your laptop serviced in Korea for disk read issues and/or a comprehensive cleaning? (Bear with my ignorance if this is the sort of problem you can solve at home.)

2) For those of you who have purchased laptops in Korea, do you have any tips/reccomendations? I've perused the appropriate forum sticky, but I am all ears for additional information.

I'm not looking for a super-fast gaming PC. Really, I just need something with decent hard drive space, enough RAM to play music/videos, and HDMI input.

Any help would be much obliged!

There are literally hundreds of laptops on the market. IMO, there isn't really a truly bad one out there. All the reputable laptop manufacturers are very close in terms of quality and value for money (except for one which we don't mention!).

My best advice is to walk around Yongsan and look at as many laptops as you have time and patience for. Make a shortlist.

Do you have a budget?

As for trying to rescue your old machine.....not worth it. It's 5 years old....let it go....it has done well for you. Time to move on.

As for budget, I would like to keep it relatively modest: maybe in the 700,000KRW range? Or is that unrealistic?

700,000 would get it done.

But as Eamo said, just dont buy the first one that you see at Yongsan. Some of their laptops are horrid deals.

For 700,000 won you should be able to get:

i3 / i5 processor
4 gigs of ram
500gig hdd
your choice of laptop size, 13,15,17 inch
a solid low end gfx card
legit windows 7 installed

just shop around

What I've learned so far from Yongsan:

If you want great welcoming and smiling faces, almost to the point that you want to avoid them (I imagine them about to east me alive with their enthusiasm for sale), go to I' park. In exchange of them killing you with kindness, they'll kill your wallet.

If you have luck on your side, go outside. You get better chances of a decent deal. In exchange is being eaten alive by their rudeness.

Both places require killer skills of haggling.
