My contract says I have insurance. My work says I can't get it till I've been there three months. This was not the case at my last hagwon, and I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be the case. Is this normal? Do they have a right to do that?

That's not normal. They should be able to insure you as soon as you get your alien card. Don't wait 3 months - they will never insure you. They don't want to pay their half of the premiums. When they do insure you or if you ever insure yourself you will have to retroactively pay premiums for the duration of your stay in Korea. I would get on your employer about this now. Call the Gov't Health Insurance office at 02-390-2000 (English) if your employer doesn't take care of this.

Your employer should be deducting and paying both halves of insurance (yours and theirs) from the get go. If you do not have the card, you may have to pay the full amount (ie, as if you do not have insurance coverage) but once you have it, you can apply for reimbursement.

In other words, insurance payments and coverage start at the beginning of your contract. Your employer is either ignorant or scamming you. Unless you are his first ever teacher, the it is clearly a case of the second. Call the insurance co and get this reported and dealt with. I recommend that you check that you are signed up for pension as well.

Definitely get on this right away. First of all, it's the law. All teachers (not sure about F series teachers) must have National Health Insurance and Pension. These programs are tied together, so if you enroll in one, you're enrolled in the other as well. Second, you will have to pay retroactively. The sum of three months' insurance and pension payments is quite costly, so if you take care of it now, you won't have to pay a lot up front. Finally, it's in your best interest to enroll in insurance and pension. If you're American, you can collect your pension contributions as well as your employers contributions at the end of your contract. It's a pain to pay into it, but you actually profit from it at the end.

Your supposed to be covered by the National Health Insurance from your first day in Korea. Usually it can take up to two weeks to receive the actual card. Also note, if you don't have the card yet, you can take your ARC card to a hospital and they can look up your insurance coverage in the system based on your ARC number. Good luck getting that done. It's a must!
