I'm interviewing for a job in Geoje and I wanted to get some opinions. Is it a good place to live if you're in your early to mid 20s? I like going out, but more to low-key bars and am not into clubbing or anything like that, and I also like hiking. Would Geoje be a good fit? Is there a younger crowd there, or is it mostly older people?
I know there have been a few discussions about Geoje, but any additional info would be appreciated! |

I've vacationed there so I don't know THAT much about the area...I don't think you're going to have much of a nightlife down there, I don't think there is that large a population of ESL teachers...a lot of shipyard workers though. If you like hiking you're in luck and you're not terribly far from Busan.
Geoje is one of those places which IMO is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. |

I assume no more than a handful of foreigners live there so you will be pretty isolated. It's a vacation area with tons of pensions. Other than that farms and small towns. Almost no foreign food except for pizza and such. No foreign groceries either. You will surely want to have a car. Its good if you like nature, beaches, fishing and stuff but to go there as a young newbie isn't a good idea.
Just checked and there is emart, home plus and lotte mart in Tongyong or Geoje so you can get some foreign stuff. But its not enough to make it more attractive. Even though I like quiet places.

Lazio is wrong but his logic was reasonable.
A hell of a lot of foreigners live in Geoje. They are all engineers and managers working for Maersk, BP, Shell, and other multi-national companies.
Geoje is one of the world's largest ship building areas in the world. Those companies are the customers and every one has an engineer (or three) for every one of 50 different systems/section of a ship/platform. Every day inspecting the vessel they will be receiving when completed. |

I stand corrected.
But if you take the English teachers only, the numbers must be real low. And that is where OP would most likely seek and find connections so the options are still very limited. Managers and engineers most likely won't mingle with English teachers. But what do I know. |

"The 16,352 foreigners in Geoje account for 6.6 percent of the population there, and they have given it something of a European atmosphere. Foreigners go sailing at weekends in the waters surrounding the island and play rugby and cricket. Artisanal sausages are commonly available. There are around 100 foreign restaurants and pubs on a strip popular among its overseas residents.
The number of foreigners in Geoje has almost doubled from 9,235 in 2010."

I'm guessing that 100 foreign bars and restaurants is an exaggeration. But I'm curious to find out. |

Not even close to accurate.

Appreciated. Misleading information is unhelpful. |
