I went to Gstar as a console gamer. Way too much PC stuff, but that's to be expected in Korea. I stuck mainly to the XBOX and PS3 sections.
I used the Kinect for a couple of games, not all that impressed over all. Stood in line for Sonic Riders but was most impressed by the yoga game being demoed next to me.
The yoga game had you mimicing a few basic yoga poses, but the character model was pretty specific for every different user: saw three different people step up and it got all their clothes more or less perfect. It also got the movement mimicry perfect. Made wireframe of all major joints and recognized depth of field. much better than the Wii! Then the demo switched to a crappy block catching game that put a full video representation of the user on the screen, you could see the details on their shirts! Heads got a little warped, but it was most impressive part of the Kinect.
Sonic Riders showed me the learning curve of the menus. Using your hand to windmill rotate menus and slowly drag icons to start games was a pain. I had watched 3 people in front of me do it and I still had a lot of trouble... The game itself was pretty intense. I had noticed the people in front of me flubbing a lot of jumps so I really gave it my all, managed a few S ranks but got a few C ranks as well, seemed kinda random in it's pick up. for those S ranks I was jumping as high as I could, maybe waving my arms around, too. It was cool to use special weapons: coke can you shake your hand for ~5 seconds and then explosion. missile you throw like a football. Bowling ball you can figure out. It was fun. But i'm not going to be able to jump around like that at home, risk smashing my children!
Both games had noticeable lag. More than milliseconds. The lag is what was making me get random C ranking on jumps. Nothing serious, but I'm going to wait for Kinect 2.0
Wasn't that impressed with any other Kinect games. just a bunch of minigames. Holding your hands out driving an imaginary steering wheel looked stupid. Yoga game is only for weirdos. Kinectimals for kids.
Played Gears of War 3. great fun! Chopped a lot of dudes in half! Lambent locust had some new twists. Shoot a dude too little and he'll explode into one of those tentacle monsters! and LAMBENT BERSERKER was sweet but pointless. I danced around that guy for a full minute before I stood directly in front of him and he still didn't kill me. must have been on easy. Also, you can play as the Horde now. Saw Butcher, Wretch and Ticker in play. Looked fun.
Marvel Vs Capcom 3 was wild fun. played a few rounds against my friend who kicked my butt with easy mode enabled. then I palyed one of the docents and he stomped me WITH THE CONTROLLER BEHIND HIS BACK! Jerk. The character models are really nice. Moves a blast and I'm gonna buy it day one.
Ps3 section was way more impressive than Xbox section. they had a ~20 car bank of racing cockpits playing GT5 in 3d. But the line was 40 people deep. I loved the boring looks on the booth babes face's as they showed the 11 hundredth geek how to punch in THE FIGHT. Then they'd applaud after the kid got his butt whooped!
Killzone 3 was rad, but short. 3 minute demo tops. lots of blood, same immersion as the past games. Graphics beautiful for a pre-alpha. Can't wait!
Game of the show was MOTORSTORM APOCALYPSE in 3D. Game was beautiful. 3D really added to the experience of dodging exploding tankers and collapsing buildings. Depth of field was amazing. I was sceptical of 3D until I played that demo... Look at the demo from E3 and you'll see a huge jump where the floor caves in just as you touch down and you are plunged a couple extra stories underground; that part was whoa immersive. I flinched! My jerk friend refused to play it cus he doesn't like racing games, but this was seriously the best gaming experience I had in a while! Dudes on the track shooting machine guns at you. Buildings exploding, then you race up their canted sides. Helicopters hooting missiles all over the place. Run over a motorcyclist and his body and bike will flap around in your field of view for a while, in glorious 3D! rad. |
