..rang my doorbell over and over at 10pm last night. She then proceeded to tell me that another foreign guy two doors down also hadn't filled in his census. She then put another identical form in front of me and insisted I fill out his census form for him.
Got to love proper procedure in the land of slap and dash.
Edit: Mine was very nice too. I should have also mentioned that!

Mine was pretty cool. She came by and asked if I had gotten and filled out the census. I told her no, because I don't really speak enough Korean to do it well.
She then gave me the one in English, and said she'd be back by in ten minutes. She asked if I had a pencil, and I said no. She gave me her pencil.
I filled out the census, which took 4 minutes. Then she came by and took the census. |

| I found it in English on my door and entered a code on their website to take the survey asking detailed questions about the detailed features of the property I live in. |

I really admire what they do with us, in the face of the insurmountable language barrier!
Mine had me call a friend, who didn't answer her phone. Then she called the same friend, who for some reason answered this time. Then she took my name, and I think she explained that she didn't need any more information, and then she left. |

The woman who came to my door was nice. I let her inside and she guided me through the survey thingy constantly flipping back and forth between her Korean copy and the English copy I was filling out. She didn't speak any English...
She wanted to squat on the floor with me so I sort of half-Asian squatted with her. I really don't find squatting comfortable, but I did it just for her. After filling out the survey I gave her a couple of "gyool" (mandarin oranges).
Yepp... that was the highlight of my night. |

At 11:00 PM on a work night my doorbell rang with the census lady to greet me.
After 2 minutes of trying to communicate with me, she decided to invite herself into my house where she proceeded to try to talk to me in Korean with hopes that I would suddenly become fluent.
After 5 minutes of that, she finally mustered up some English, "My name is..."
Then on the next question I had no clue what she was trying to convey (turns out it was age), and she was giving up hopes that I would become fluent in 5 minutes, so she woke up a neighbor to help translate.
Filled out a few more questions, then she left. |

| Mine spoke English and was very polite. I was trying to do several things at once when she arrived, what was one more? |

| Our census lady showed up at 9pm on Saturday night....luckily we had a gyopo friend over, because she knew zip zero nada English. I was kind of annoyed that she was acting all scared of our dog....show up at my door on a weekend night at what I consider to be a rude hour and act like my little guy is a monster. All in all though pretty painless thanks to our friend being there. |

I would have said that I don't know him or any personal information about him. Then I would have asked to speak to her supervisor. |

That sounds reasonable. What would you have said to her supervisor?
Anyways, there was a piece of paper taped to my door with a code on it. I went to census.go.kr and entered the code and selected English. Took about 5 minutes to complete. All my Korean co workers were surprised I was doing it because they all were either not going to do it themselves, didn't know what a census was, or told me that foreigners didn't have to do it (which is false).

I worked for the 2010 US Census this year and can tell you that she is probably following procedure. For the US, we had to go to peoples homes who hadn't turned their forms in and get the information. If they were hostile or we couldn't find them or couldn't get the information for whatever reason, we would talk to neighbors.
I filled my census out online, but because of the delay in processing, they still came to my house. My neighbor had been avoiding them (and everyone else from all the past due notices we get in our shared mailbox...) and she asked if I knew the neighbor. I knew enough about her that they got her done too and won't be coming back.
What is the big deal that people have with doing the census? They don't ask terribly personal questions (even the US census is pretty tame, despite what certain media morons say), it takes little time, and it's important for what little government planning goes on here. Plus, the people who work for the census are just part timers trying to fill out a form. Why give them a hard time? |

It's the same people who voted in all the tea baggers this week. Blindly follow whatever Fox News says, insist their constitutional rights are being infringed (without ever reading the constitution...cause it says right in it we need to do a census), and vote for the biggest moron they can, who will end up screwing them over.
The funniest bit was when Michele Bachmann told her constituents to not fill out the census, since it was "big brother" checking in on them. Then someone mentioned that if they didn't fill out the census, and the population looked smaller, they might take away her house seat. So she retracted it and told everyone to fill it out...
Fill out the census people...accurate population numbers are important for a ton of reasons. |

Two women showed up at 9:30pm yesterday night. I was in the middle of "relations" with the gf and didn't answer the door. Maybe 30 minutes later we left the place and they were in the hall talking.
I was annoyed that a) they arrived so late, and b) just brushed it off like it was nothing. Though they were extremely friendly and totally unphased at foreigner plus kgf walking out afterwards. |

I'd have asked if filling out census forms for people you don't even know is legal in Korea. |
