Looking into moving to Korea to teach English this coming fall, just had a few questions as I will be bringing my wife and child with me.

1) Is it possible to support a family on the income of one ESL teacher in South Korea?
2) Would my wife and child be covered by the medical insurance I'd have through my employer?

1) yes. Many of us do it.
2) Yes PROVIDED you work at a public school and are enrolled in the NHIC.
NO for most hagwan teachers since they are NOT enrolled in the NHIC.

If you are enrolled in the NHIC your dependents are added to your insurance booklet and have equal coverage. There is NO additional fee or premium to add them. They must however be registered foreigners (have an ARC) to be added.

When I applied with my public school I told them that my wife would be joining me. I was lucky that they got me a bigger apartement than what the other teacher in town.
I added my wife to the insurance and it was a little extra, but not that much extra. We also still saved a lot of money with her not working the first year she was in Korea with me.

I work for a hagwon and both my wife and kids are covered by NHIC.

Thanks for the feedback, it's most helpful. I also forgot to ask:

1) Will my wife have to pass the same Medical Exam that I do?
2) Also, my wife has a misdemeanour from some years ago, will they be running a background check on her?

There is NO change in the premium to add family dependents.
It is based as a percentage of your income not the number of members in the family. If your premium increased it would have been due to the (regular) annual increase or change in your income not because of the addition of your family members.

As to support your wife and and your child. It can be done. Still there is a caveat. How old is your child! If under six you are doing okay - Kindergarten and daycare can get a touch expensive.

School age and above - Education just got expensive! Unless you want to send your kid to a Korean school with no Korean speaking ability. The International schools here can be horribly expensive and for a hagwon or even public school salary can not pay for it.

Do not take this the wrong way. But coming to Korea the first time with baggage like a boyfriend/spouse, children, pets, medical problems things get very very difficult. I generally say if you have some baggage you might not want to come. I am not saying it is impossible but for first timers it can destroy them.

Good Luck Man!
