I've been here about 6 months now, and in the last couple of months I've noticed that almost all of the elementary and middle school students I teach at my hagwon have either a bald spot on the crowns of their heads or have thinning hair. The latter is especially noticeable w/ the girls.

Has anyone else noticed this w/ their students? Just curious.

This is sooo funny!

This does not only apply to the students. It is the same for many Koreans, especially women. It's not a thinning of the hair as in they are losing hair. I think it's a combination of having thin stranded hair and less of it on the crown region. It will stay that way their whole lives, not getting any worse (until the appropriate age for it to begin actually thinning). I am sure it's genetic.

<--- General discussion, maybe? :p

Laughing i don't think it's genetic! there's been talk that there's something really bad for your hair in the tap water here and that the pollution in the rain isn't so hot either.

OP, do you have long hair? it'll be more noticeable if you do. i think you'll find that you'll start losing quite a bit of hair when you're living here. 90% of the people i've talked to over the years, predominately the girls, have noticed lots of hair in the drain and over their floors.

A mate of mine who stayed in Korea for a year came away with a slight bald patch but within time, the bald patch disappeared. So it might be something to do with the water or maybe stress. Who knows - I know my mate was stressed when he came back home. Laughing

This is great news for me, I've been wanting to get thinner hair for ages. Most of the time it looks like I have a dead animal on my head.
