This is too much, we have no heat until mid, or most likely, late November. Teaching with long underwear, coat, scarf, and mittens is ridiculous. My rattly windows complete with holes at the top for some none existant fan don't help either. |

I'll sacrifice looking good in class for not getting hypothermia! Or just wear tons of layers so that I can't even put my arms down. |

Welcome to teaching in Korea! Hopefully your school has more than those white radiator heater things that my school has ....even when on the heat is barely noticeable. |

Not turning on the heaters or A/C in public schools is usually down to one of two things....
1. The inevitable middle-aged men who run the school believe that if they went through school with little or no heating in Winter, and it didn't kill them, then the current school generation can go through the same discomfort.
2. Someone is pocketing the schools heating budget. |

my principal is a woman in her 60s and she's been single all her life. i think she's miserable. but she's probably the stingiest person i've ever met. she doesn't allow any extra appliances to be used (i.e. electric seat warmers, personal heaters) because she wants to save money.
it's so bad that they even turned off the hot water.
during ALL of summer, even during summer classes, the AC was only turned on after 12pm.
she doesn't let students wear jackets during class and during lunch, they get confiscated.
our school lunch was consistently crap until the students parents complained to the district office that the school lunch wasn't edible. some people from district came and lunch became normal again.
there's no toilet paper in the teachers bathrooms (i know lots of schools do this but my last school had the decency to have toilet paper for teachers)
during the summer, i came to school early and the internet wasn't working. all the teachers were dumbstruck, waiting for the technician guy to come. it turns out, the principal turns off the power on everything and unplugs the outlets to save money.
sometimes when i'm taking a poop, she'll walk around in the hallways turning off lights, and she's turned it off twice so far while i was pooping. really effing annoying. [/endrant] |

We don't have hot water, but in the summer we had AC up to 26 and it was cooler outside than inside. Some of us actually have brough blankets to the office. |

Doesn't really sound like a top uni.......top Uni's typically have the kids of rich families as students.....they expect better than that. |

Haha, all kidding aside, Naturegirl, I gotta say I feel your pain. I used to work at an elementary school where we had one of those principals who wanted to "save" money at the expense of student & teacher's comfort.
I remember while walking into my school everyday, seeing the poor students sitting in class with their coats on, shivering in their cold seats, while the teacher actually opened the windows to the freezing air outside.
The lunch trays would be freezing cold to the touch, and once you put the somewhat warm food on it (which was very loooow budget food, almost gruel like with processed meats) it would instantly lose any heat.
So glad I don't work there anymore. Now I'm at a school where the principal is awesome. He personally makes sure the food is always tip top, or he'll fire the company. I heard we pay like 500 won more per meal than most schools do for a much nicer meal. I'll pay that 500 won no problemo! And inside our office it is soooo cozy and warm.
Really, there is no reason people shouldn't be able to work in comfort and enjoy the modern inventions like electricity that we have today! Even if one goes by the name Naturegirl! |

Not only are there few heaters in my school, but everyone here insists on having the windows open. When I asked my co-teacher why they did this, she said it was for "fresh air" |

Sorry.
I can't deal with the cold myself. Did you try talking to the principal about it? You can say you are afraid the students will get sick.

Effed up is putting it politely. That sucks~!

Are you talking about the white wall units or the space heaters? My wall units work great. I usually have to turn them off after a few minutes because even I get hot. Now space heaters.... worthless in a room with a door that opens.

I walked uphill to school in 2 feet of snow BOTH WAYS when I was a kid with no shoes. ^^

My hagwon shares the floor with two other schools, so there isn't toilet paper in the bathroom, but there is toilet paper in our school for the children to take, and there is toilet paper in the office for the teachers to take. Are you saying there is no toilet paper in the school for you at all? You have to bring your own tissues?

No toilet paper, and you have to poop in the dark. Ok, let's consider this Karma and you are just going through the bad part now and you will be rewarded with a good school soon. Ok? ^^ |
