Yesterday I was told that in two weeks the Korean age six and seven year olds must give a speech in English...also they must memorize the speech - no notecards!

With all this in mind, I'm thinking of making a sheet with easy fill-in sentences, e.g. "Hi, my name is __________. I want to be a _________ or _________. My favorite food is __________."

My head teacher wants them to memorize at least 10 sentences. I'm trying to convince her on anything between 5-10 sentences being okay. Any ideas for easy fill-in sentences, or new ideas all together?

Any help is appreciated!

I think you are on the right track with the 'fill in sheet', and 8 to 10 sentences should be plenty. You could also have them talk about their family, teachers, sports they like to watch or play, favorite music, tv shows, and movies.

How about having a pre-speech preparation activity where everyone gets measured and weighed and include the information in the speeches?

My students do this kind of thing all the time.
They are usually given a monologue (the kind of thing that would be the reading part of an esl book "Kiwis are often called blah blah blah...") and told to memorise it.
I believe they dont understand half of it, but thats not the point, apparently...

So find a nice paragraph (or two) that gives a small speech about a famous thing or topic (from a book eg.) and give it to them to memorise. Id say it should last them about 15/20 seconds.

I think it would be more valuable to include the students in the construction of their essays. Because the information is relevant to them it will be more authentic and meaningful than something that was handed to them from a text book. Also, as the information will be memorized it could actually be used again in context and in conversation with others. The point is to understand it...and use it.
