came across a contract of a friend and it states in Chungnam Province/Daejeon Area of all places that Female candidates at public school CAN NOT get pregnant... ! ? ! ? there's no Maternity Leave ... 0 Zero ... Zilch !!!!!

What's next..??????

any other stuff you folk find strange as teachers????
besides the obvious dog eating and other un-related-to-teaching stuff????

another point may be that we don't have a right (or maybe we don't have enough knowledge) to form a Forum/Union to protect ourselves/these unfortunate newbies.... sooner or later to become us...

did it really come to this...??? to the point where unfortunate foreigners are practically Forced out??? with NO VOICE to speak for them???? i'm no Superman or Spiderman, but C'mon guys..??!!??? some Koreans treat foreigners like dirt and sub standard as if to say go back to your country we don't need you?!?!? (really?!? that must be why there's adds all over the world asking for teachers to come here URGENTLY may i add...) with a Government pushing for more teachers...more teachers....

this may well be a rant... but i just had enough!! it's almost like there's no hope for this colony...

After 6 months of employment, a worker is covered under the Labor Standards Act. That Chungnam contract contradicts the Labor Standards Act and the contradictory contract clauses are automatically void.

Relevant parts of the Act:

Article 73 (Menstruation Leave)
An employer shall, upon request of a female worker, grant her one-day menstruation leave per month.
Article 74 (Protection of Pregnant Women)
(1) An employer shall grant a pregnant female worker 90 days of maternity leave before and after childbirth. In such case, 45 days or more shall be allocated after the childbirth.
(2) At the request of a pregnant female worker who has a miscarriage or still birth after 16 weeks of pregnancy, theemployer shall grant her protective leave as prescribed in thePresidential Decree, except where the miscarriage is caused by anartificially induced abortion operation (excluding cases prescribed in Article 14 (1) of the Mother and Child Health Act).
(3) Of the leave under paragraphs (1) and (2), the first 60 days' leave shall be with pay, except that if maternity leavebenefits, etc., are already paid pursuant to Article 18 of the Acton Equal Employment and Support for Work-Family Reconciliation, the employer shall be relieved of the responsibility to the extentof such amount. <Amended by Act No. 8781, Dec. 21, 2007> <Enforcement Date Jun. 22, 2008>
(4) No employer shall put a pregnant female worker on an overtime duty, and, if there is a request from the worker, the employer shall transfer her to a light duty.
(5) After the end of the protective leave under paragraph
(1), the employer shall allow the female worker to return to the same work, or one with the same level of pay, as before theleave. <Newly Inserted by Act No. 9038, Mar. 28, 2008> <Enforcement Date Mar. 28, 2008>
Article 74-2 (Allowing Time Off for Prenatal Examination)
(1) If a pregnant female worker makes a request to take time off from work to receive a regular health checkup for pregnant women, the employer shall allow her to do so.
(2) An employer shall not cut a worker's wages on the ground that she takes time off for the health checkup underparagraph (1). <Newly Inserted by Act No. 8960, Mar. 21, 2008> <Enforcement Date Jul. 1, 2008>
Article 75 (Nursing Hours)
A female worker who has an infant under twelve months shall be allowed to take paid recesses, twice per day for more than 30 minutes each.

You are aware that "female candidates" can be KOREAN as well? And that there are far more female KOREANS working in public school then female foreigners? So what is this stuff about "unfortunate foreigners" and "some Koreans treat foreigners like dirt"? Shouldn't it be "unfortunate females."?

Plus I work in Chungnam province and there is no such clause in my contract.

That's probably an after-school program or something like that. And even if not...as Mr OculisOrbis pointed out the KLSA trumps the contract.

I'm not Korean. Take that old tired chestnut out to play elsewhere. Now try to remember what you posted. You said quite clearly that female candidates were not allowed to become pregnant. But then you went on a rant about how this supposedly proves foreigners have no rights. Since "female candidates" includes Korean females too what about them since they are a much larger group than female foreigners here? But you never mentioned them at all. So I wouldn't be talking too loud about other people's lack of gray matter were I you.

Now go play nicely with the other kids in the sandbox.

I lol'd. Do local women have more difficult mensturation? I've had friends excuse themselves from doing active stuff because of it. Or maybe they just don't like me Smile

I sat beside an english speaking Korean guy on the bus one time, who was having the most hilarious phone conversation...

"You gotta come out with me tonight blah blah Aw come on, blah blah... Why not? Are you having your menstural period?"

He then tried to get me to come out with him. I just politely said no.

Urban: stop flexing cyber muscle, and do something useful...go away!... you quote staying on tract with the post without looking at/thinking about what YOU are writing...a case of pot calling the kettle black if you ask me!!?...
you go off on chestnuts and crap... since when would we try and post about korean females - it's universally accepted as logic would suggest that on a foreigner/ex-pat forum we'll talk about just THAT! ex-pats... but then again logic is something you and the guy in your mirror has little of. i don't care how large the korean female population is... never have!! then lastly, but certainly not the least... i would be sooo careful to mention g-matter and your name in the same line... and oh! i actually love the sandbox, thank you very muchiee.... that means i can communicate on many levels, which is something you cant, so stay at the top of the food-chain you superior urban myth being... humbug!
