Sorry guys, I know there are numerous threads on these places but I'm having trouble finding what I want.
In February I have about 14-15 days to spend abroad so I'm thinking of going to Bohol and then Koh Tao. I want to know where to stay. I'm not really looking for a big party. I want to relax by the beach but still have the option of finding some other tourists around if I do want to go for a few drinks, which I will. I'm not willing to spend too much on accommodation but at the same time I don't want to slum it either.
I'm also hoping to take a diving course at some stage during the trip. I hear that Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places to do it. Would you agree? Any suggestions would be really appreciated. |

Costs for a PADI cert (C-card/open water) are pretty standard throughout SE Asia.
There are lots of OK places on the beach in Bohol. Most folks head for Alona beach but there are others as well (on Panglao and on the main island of Bohol). In Feb. there won't be any need to pre-book your room.
If you are flying into Cebu and talking the ferry over you will get there just after lunch.
If you are flying into TAG (from ICN via MNL) then you will either be on the first plane landing at 8am or the one around lunchtime. Again, catch a trike (or METERED taxi) down to the beach (about p300) and choose your place right off the beach.
Personally, I like the Alona Tropical but have stayed at many of the others and with the exception of the CHEAPest rooms at Alona Kew or the p500 rooms behind OOPS bar most of them are acceptable and in the p1200-p2000 range (fan or aircon).
Never been to Koh Tao so I can't tell you much about the specific location but the gulf islands are nice and so is the diving in the Gulf.

Koh Tao's diving is a bit overrated, IMO. You end up with 4-5 other groups at a site (yes, they're supposed to space them out, but...) and that means at least 20-odd people in a small area and you'll bump into them again and again if you do more than one dive a day.
Haven't been to Cebu/Bohol (Palawan is awesome!!), but it seems it may be quieter at that time than Tao, so less people and better visibility and it seems to have more sites than Tao with less people.
But if you're a first-timer, then Tao might be better-- smaller, so more of a congregation of people to hang out with after the dives and a better 'night scene' (?) for chilling.[/b] |
