Got the Galaxy S phone, which is great. The connecting software to the PC however, isn't. It hangs, it blue screens my PC, it crashes worse than a pilotless plane.

BUT there is a reprieve:
You DON'T need to root your phone for this: First, in the 'Market' get the free virus checker called 'Lookout'. It works well.

Then, search the net for any apps you might want. Then FROM YOUR MOBILE go to

www.4shared.com

Search there, and in the search bar, don't forget to add 'apk' as an extension. Those apps are for Android. There's a tutorial on YT about this but it's pretty straightforward.

Once you've downloaded it, just install it. Your phone has to be set to accept unknown apps but the virus protection covers it.

I've downloaded racing games, tennis games, etc., with no probs.

Kies is working at the moment for me......although it is horrible, horrible software.

I just get all my apps and games from reputable torrent sites and transfer to my phones .apk folder. Don't use a virus checker. No problems so far.

There are plenty of private forums where people share files amongst each other. If a file has a virus, I'm sure someone will point it out quick enough.

Hey Eamo,

I tried that on an Unrooted phone. Couldn't do it. I did find the apk folder and dropped in a few apps, but they didn't show up anywhere on the phone.
Did you have to root your phone to do it? I've been paranoid about rooting ( Smile

Plus if Kies doesn' work, you can't just drop in apps from torrents can you?

Read the Galaxy S thread just under this one to get all the info on how to transfer stuff to your phone without using Kies. As well as most other useful info for this phone.

You'll need the Samsung phone USB driver though.......it's linked in that thread.

A simple way to install apps is to put the apk files on the external SD card, and then use the default 'program explorer' app to install them.
My phone is rooted, so it installs the apps onto a partition on the SD card, rather than the internal memory card.

Well Carleverson when it' all said and done, the phone part of the phone works just fine. So in my emergency I'll have a spare battery in my pocket. Will you have a spare battery for your iPhone? ahh haaaa Smile

This thread seems to have gone OT a bit, so I'll add my two cents. Neither the iPhone 4 or Galaxy S (or any other Android phone) is better. They are different. The iPhone is definitely more locked down, but to some people that doesn't matter. To some people it may even be a benefit. The iPhone 4's screen resolution is the best of any phone right now, but the Galaxy S has a bigger and higher contrast AMOLED screen. Which is better? It depends on your priorities. Why do people get so worked up about other people's purchasing decisions? Let the iPhone 4 owners be happy with their iPhone 4s and the Galaxy owners be happy with their Galaxys (Galaxies?).

iPhone and Galaxy are both good examples of overpriced and underused toys that we insatiable consumers eat up like sugary treats which only give us a buzz for an ever shorter period before we need another kick......

....in saying that, Galaxy has better hardware, iPhone better software.......that's the state of play November 2nd, 2010.

Yes and it's hard to get a good idea of the facts unless you own both and play with them on a daily basis.

Well I got my wife the iPod Touch 4 and I got a Galaxy S. The iPod 4 is an iPhone 4 without the phone, that's all.

All is fine and dandy, but the killer is the battery. iPhones and Pods do not have spare batteries. You can only charge them with a charger connected to the phone/pod.

She's quite peed when her time is up after only about 4 hrs of game/muic play and all I have to do is switch out batteries. There you have it, as objectively as I can possibly be.
