There are some good hagwons out there, and I am always reminded about them whenever I make a statement criticizing ALL hagwons.

But, what percentage of hagwons are actually good?

I mean: ripping teachers off, in it for the money, tax fraud, no insurance, dirty apartments, poor curriculum, no clue, etc.
I think most are not good.

Look at it this way....

The most vocal people are the people who are treated badly. if you are treated well then you don't complain.

I think the majority of people are treated fairly. However there is admitely a large minority that isn't.

Phaedrus,

Nice "fair" poll that will not of course "guide" the results... Laughing

the highest you give is 40% and then it jumps to 100% with an added (yeah right)....nice...this is a truly well constructed poll that will only confirm your opinion of things.

How about giving options that would better reflect the reality of things, or at least have the ability to do so? Wink

I would have to agree with Homer, the poll does not give a fair representation, 40% then 100%. Even 10% increments would have been fairer. Smile

I agree, if teachers were treated fairly in Korea nobody would complain, however, the great percentage of people I talk to have some sort of beef.

The only teachers I ever met who didn't complain were NOT hagwan teachers, they were university teachers. Not to say there aren't some bad universities out there too. But I have yet to meet a hagwan teacher who has no complaints. Confused

They are all bad, to some extent, way, shape or form. Some are just less bad. Confused

I'm sure someone will get on here now and say ,
"well I have no complaints and I work in a hagwan".

Good on you.

I still haven't met you. Wink

Phaedrus,

Sometimes you have to consider the person doing the complaining and think about that before simply assuming that its the schools fault.

Don't get me wrong some schools do suck. However, some teachers here are just whiners (read some..not all).

It is puzzling when someone posts a poll to solicit members opinions, but absurdly restrict the voting options.

If you don't want to hear the answer, why ask the question?

That's a good point. Some people are whiners. I also agree that hagwons probably aren't that bad.

However, I felt my hagwon was pretty good near the start, yet they still made severance into an issue, played constant mind games, wouldn't think of giving an extra day off etc. My final judgement is that they are idiots.

I usually expect the best, but by the end I was expecting the worst for everything, and not let down.

Phaedrus-By "Good", do you mean wonderful in every department? - none live up to this. Some are better than others..but they all let you down on one or two things. Some let you down on a lot more.

I suppose about a third of them are reasonably Ok.

I guess I mean reasonably okay. I want to mean so nice you could work there for the better part of your career. Now I'm not sure.

I just know my old hagwon was a festival of stupidity.

On the subject of complaints......EVERYONE complains. In every country in every occupation almost everyone has a beef with their situation or their boss. This is the nature of the phenomenon known as "work."
