|
|
I'd prefer to pick activities for each grade level; 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th as each is a very different animal. What did you find they really enjoy? I can think of many things, but I want them to fully understand it to appreciate it so they aren't bored leading to a huge waste of time. Christmas activities are a bright idea to do during the 3rd week of December. Any ideas that worked for you or that you think would be good?
I had the idea of doing Christmas crafts like stringing popcorn and cutting paper snowflakes, but find it's a huge materials requirement to supply 480 students that will most likely only end up in the trash by the end of the day. Typically back home those sorts of things are done and put up in classrooms during the 1st week of December so it carries more value than simply doing the activity itself. Any more ideas more feasible than mine? |

Grades 3 and 4;
The Snowman by Raymond Biggs has worked for me in the past. It's about 25 mins long. Hand out a worksheet after-wards including a wordsearch.
There is zero English in the movie though.
Grades 5 and 6;
Father Christmas. There is a fair amount of English in the film, but it's easy to follow.
Maybe Grade 6.
Merry Christmas Mr Bean. Most of it is good, but there is one scene where Mr Bean is stuffing a turkey (which resembles a woman!). You could edit it out, maybe. Works great for middle school and high school though.
If you teach high school (and you can find it), Blackadder's Christmas Carol works wonders, but you'll need Korean subtitles. |

'Shrek the Halls' is good although I had to use Korean subtitles.
It's about 20 minutes long, then we did a worksheet with some questions about what happened, and a generic 'write about your favorite part of the movie'
With younger kids we did make a hand tree for the classroom.

I have only A4 paper and coloring pencils, so got half an A4 sheet, cut out their hand, colored it green with pencils, wrote their name on the thumb and christmas words on the fingers. It looks pretty cool. |

How about showing "The Grudge" for the 5th and 6th graders? |

Wallace and Gromit - A Close Shave.
There's an English subtitled version of this on
EFL CLASSROOM 2.0. just google it. I don't have the link handy.
It's a story with very simple actions with English subtitles. |

I need English subtitles to follow Blackadder. Their accents are thick I don't understand a word they are saying! Funny stuff when I can figure it out though. |

i showed both 5th and 6th grade the old school grinch animation. they enjoyed it and understand the main events. you can find it streamed online if you do a search. i would recommend downloading it though, as the buffer systems on those random sites can get wonky. |

I agree, Oxford Press has a ESL workbook for this film, I have seen sample pages that look good. You can also do a search and find ESL worksheets for the film.
Mr. Bean films are good, a lot of ESL worksheets online for this too. |

I found Wall-E is great for 5th and 6th grade, but a tad bit too long for 2 class periods. They love it. |

I don't like cramming Christmas down the kids's throats. But I am doing one Christmas based activity this year.
We are going to watch John Denver and the Muppets sing "The 12 Days of Christmas." Then in a hat I will have sentence strips for each day. So then the students will sing along with video and will have to sing their lines. The five golden rings is always the funniest, especially if your class clowns or the really shy kids pull that one out of the hat. |
