From the Herald:
http://www.koreaherald.com/national/Detail.jsp?newsMLId=20101021000802

Quote:
One example is Lost, which has gained much popularity here thanks to Korean-born actress Kim Yun-jin. In it, the Han River, regarded as one of the iconic landmarks in the capital of Seoul, was described as a small stream in a village, the lawmaker said. The 1-kilometer-long bridge over the river was shown as an old small bridge, he added.

In another scene, a fishing village in Namhae, South Gyeongsang Province, was described as if it were located in Southeast Asia. In the scene, there is a villager wearing a traditional Vietnamese hat and a small sailboat, which can hardly be seen in Korea given its shape and size, was also shown, Hong said.

Also in the television series, a person seen drinking soju, a traditional Korean alcoholic beverage, uses a glass different from the typical Korean glass for the drink. Korean houses and Buddhist temples were also different from those commonly seen here.

This article cracked me up. I checked out that scene from Lost just for kicks. The characters never refer to the river as the Han nor to the name of the bridge. There is simply a sign (in Hangul) on the bridge that label it as the hangangdaegyo. In other words, the only viewers who would be misled about Korea would be those who could read Hangul, knew the Han was the big river running through Seoul, but didn't realize that the river in that scene was not the Han and the bridge was not the Han River Grand Bridge. Those who can't read Hangul would have just thought it to be some bridge somewhere in Korea.
And how are these inaccuracies hurting Korea's image? Some people were going to tour Korea until they saw "Lost: and decided, "Nah, I can see those hats in Vietnam and I don't like the looks of those soju glasses one bit.

Anyway, it got me to thinking about other movies/shows that make some reference to Korea and how those references might hurt Korea's image.

For example. In the movie "Hello Again," Shelley Long's character dies by choking on a Korean meatball. Possible negative effect on Korea's image: "Korean food can kill you." Also, having any connection whatsoever with the movie "Hello Again."

"In CSI, there was a scene of a Korean community in the United States where a North Korean song regarding an allegiance to the communist states ruling Workers Party was played as background music."

Now, that's just funny...

I didn't see that article. Was the article, which suggests that foreign media outlets have a moral obligation to depict Koreans sympathetically and fairly, next to the one on how North American English teachers are all unqualified, drug-addicted sexual perverts? Confused

Haha, I did see that episode of CSI, and it did make Koreans look pretty bad. The main Korean character is a drug-addicted, HIV-positive prostitute who has an HIV-positive kid! And she just had double eyelid surgery. But that show was about Koreatown gangs in the US, which are not something that the average Korean in Korea would really know anything about.

As for LOST, Koreans should just be happy that such a high-profile TV show featured Koreans so prominently, and as protagonists instead of villains. Thanks to that show, a whole lot more people actually know that Korea even exists!

I know what is the fact with this. The Yankees are jealous that they are not the one to bring gift of kimchi to the Earth. Did you know that kimchi is now world food? But maybe many Yankee think that kimchi too spicy, so Yankees are jealous. So they make other foreigner think that Han river is only tiny stream like in USA.

Hmm, sounds pretty consistent with how Americans and foreign English teachers are portrayed on Korean television. Maybe everybody in the entertainment industry should just do their homework.

I like the Koreans I saw in Pineapple Express And the Koreans in Harold & Kumar.

And especially the Koreans here.

When I first read the title, I thought it would be about "Bad American TV" having an effect on Korea- Steven Segal movies, Toolbox Academy, America's Next Top Model, et al. After reading that article, I just laughed.
