Please provide your best tips, sites to see, and things to do.
I'm not a clubber/late nightlife person so that is not needed.
I could look on a bunch of sites, but I would rather hear what people who have been there have done.
I do intend to hit the beach in Thailand as well as see Bangkok. |

With those time constraints I'd probably fly rather than take a train, considering how cheap the flights are. |

the train from KL is supposed to be 1 day. 4 day KL, 1+ day train, 5 day Thailand, fly to Taipei, 5 day in Taiwan. |

I have mostly lived in Thailand the last 6 years and have taken this trip several times. The tips I can give you:
The 1 day KL to BKK train would be one super long, uncomfortable day!
I recommend you take a bus KL to Hat Yai, stay overnight in Hat Yai then take an overnight train in Hat Yai to BKK. Be aware, the main KL long haul bus station is closed for renovation, the temporary bus station is in Bukit Jalil. You can take a light rail train to the Bukit Jalil stop, when you exit the light rail, turn right, the bus station is about 150 meters, across the street.
I enjoy train travel and think the overnight train Hat Yai to BKK is a great trip, a good way to see the countryside and some real Thailand. I recommend a lower birth, 2nd class A/C ticket. The lower birth is better as it is larger and it has large window. The 2nd class A/C is better as most Thai families with kids pick the cheaper fan coaches, so more kids running around making noise and such on the fan trains. There is also a limit on when snack sellers can board the A/C trains. On the fan trains, they can go all night.
As an alternative you can take a local bus from Hat Yai to Trang, Thailand (about 90mins) and explore the beaches and Islands around Trang, then take the overnight train Trang to BKK.

excellent idea, about the train, Why is it uncomfortable? Physically cramped or just long boring ride? I would probably get the 1st class also, I pamper myself when on vacation |

The train is overall comfortable, I just think it would be a long time to be on a train. Due to the number of stops and the route, the leg KL to Hat Yai takes several hours more on the train then the bus, that is why I recommend the bus for that leg. |

I have never taught here in Thailand, the pay is too low, the hours too long. I work in Japan and Korea, save money and then come back to Thailand to spend it.
Humm, I don't really have any brilliant tips for BKK, I have not spent a lot of time there recently. I have been to the usual tourist sites like the royal palace and main temples, but don't think I can tell you more than you can find online or in the guidebooks. I mostly stay in Koh Chang on the southeast seaboard. |

personally i think the train from KL to BKK is a waste of time when air asia flights are so cheap.
i'm not a beach person so i think the north is nicer, friendlier, and much cheaper than the south.
chiang mai is a super nice city. |

1/15th of your trip will be spent on a train. That's fairly significant, particularly when you're moving around that much already. Have you ever done a long-haul berth before? They'll really wipe you out, and much of the time there won't be much to see from the train anyway. It's got some local flair, but considering an Air Asia flight will only cost you between 50,000 and 75,000 won, whereas the train will probably be about 30-40,000 won, I personally wouldn't think twice about flying. |

you guys are really trying to talk me out of the train. I'll see whats up with the airlines. i suppose i could book another ticket. I'm thinking I should get a TA to set all this up. |

It's really not worth using a travel agent with the budget airlines available in the region. Check out Jet Star and Air Asia, you should be able to do the whole trip really cheap on your own, and it will likely be less hassle than using an intermediary. A Korean travel agent is useful insofar as getting you into and out of Korea, but will likely cost you significantly more if you're booking through them for the kind of flights you're looking at. I'm not even sure that travel agents can book through those budget airlines. |
