i heard that they have merged, does that mean that currently the epik admissions committee has replaced the smoe committee, or vice versa?

what about gepik? is that a separate group of people?

source?

How and why would they merge? Foreigners don't work on the board- I'm sure that if they did merge, a few locals would lose their jobs (not likely to happen)

They have a few Kyopo's who are hired to iron out cultural differences. I talked to one of them. She said her main duty was to ensure the Korean teachers actually Co-teach . Other than that they are not really given any real authority. Other than the fact that they can blow the whistle on a Korean Co-teach who is claiming extra income for Co-teaching but not actually in room when the Foriegn teacher is ment to be teaching.

Lots of these so called co-ordinators have schools they work at.

NIIED (the umbrella organization for EPIK recruitment) HAS taken over the responsibility for recruitment within and for the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (after the rather embarrassing scandal that occurred last year within SMOE) .

They have NOTHING to do with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (GEPIK).

I have heard many people talk about the SMOE scandal as though it is directly related to our SMOE jobs, which it really isn't.

I think you are confusing SMOE, which is a massive organization that oversees many aspects of all public schools in Korea and the English teacher recruitment part of it, which is one small office in a complex of big buildings. Corruption in SMOE has nothing at all to do with foreign teacher admissions or day to day work.

Also, I really laughed at the idea of an "admissions committee" looking over the application materials, having meetings and discussing the ideal candidates.
