|
|
Hi all,
Will be heading to Korea soon from Ireland. Could anyone who has done so in the last while please let me know what route you had to take and what was the baggage allowance. 1 bag + hand luggage? 2 bags + hand luggage?
Or was it done by weight
thanks |

| It is usually one carry on bag at around 15kgs, one suitcase between 20-30kgs and one handbag/plastic bag, laptop - who are you flying with? |

Not sure yet. There is a new etihad flight from Dublin - Abu Dabi - Seoul.
They allow 7kg hand luggage and 20kg suitcase. They charge 35$ per Kg over. That's pretty crap though - moving your life in such a small weight !
Korean Air go from London Heathrow and allow 20kg plus 12kg H.L.
Problem there is whether the hagwon will pay to get us to London or if we'll have to get ourselves there. Travelling as a couple so the extra 5Kgs of H.L. each would amount to a good bit more stuff !
How did you travel ? |

Give Emirates a go - they allow 30kgs and you can fly Dublin to Manchester with a local carrier then Manchester to Seoul with Emirates cheaply enough. Will your school reimburse you domestic flights - mine never have to be honest.
I have always found that if you are over 4-5kgs then they let you through - try not to be first in line though because thats when they are the keenest. After they have checked through 200 or so passengers - they really aren't going to give a monkeys. But then it is all luck of the draw at the end of the day with this. |

I flew to London (Ryanair) and then onto Seoul (Emirates). Ryanair only allow 1 checked bag of 20KG and 1 small carry on bag. Also the charge for the checked bag will probably run you more than the cost of the flight itself. You are probably better off flying direct from Dublin if you can. It may be 100euro or so more expensive but will work out cheaper (for you) in the long run.
I doubt the Hagwon will pay for your flight to England, if you take one. |

We flew Dublin to London with AerLingus and then London to Seoul via Dubai with emirates. If you book the ticket all together (example we booked with expedia) since Emirates was the main carrier Aerlingus allow the heavier weight they do with with all connecting flights. As far a hand luggage goes they bearly even checked. I'v flown Dub to Seoul a few times now and emitates was by far the best one.
Oh also if your booking a sites like expedia or skyscanner etc, always use the .com site not the .ie or .co.uk sites as there much much more expensive. My flight was 400euro including everything and our hagwon paid for everything. |

| Any time I've ever flown from Ireland, there has been a 20 kg limit on checked luggage. Not sure about the carry on. On Cathay Pacific they let me have 24 with no extra charge. |

fly with emirates, it may be an extra stopover but it's very comfortable, an extra 10kg check in and the entertainment system and legroom are better than everyone else I have flown with on the route (B.A, lufthansa, air france, klm)
as said before, you can do it through expedia and get the entire flight on one ticket and aer lingus will honour the 30kg baggage allowance of the main carrier. |

Thanks guys. It's looking like we will be travelling around xmas so flights will be more expensive. Hagwon will be paying for us though and will prob book our flights themselves .... Won't they?
The extra luggage is a bit of a priority would love 30kgs each instead of 20kgs. It's a considerable difference. |

They might. I've booked three flights myself and later been refunded for them in Korea, and I had one booked for me. It's best to ask about this now.
And I definitely, along with everyone else, recommend Emirates. BA was a close second though. But steer clear of KLM and Lufthansa. |

Well two main reasons. It's cheaper to bring stuff than buy new stuff in Korea when you already have it sitting at home. Also I have it on good authority that it may not always be easy to get clothes and shoes in your size. I will not be living in one of the big 6 cities which will make it more difficult again I would imagine. |

It is much easier to bring your own stuff, but don't bring too much. Don't bring any dvds/cds etc. Just download everything here. Bring your allowance, you may as well, you paid for it.
Don't worry about others saying you can get it all here. That may be true, but you will have to buy it again and that's just a giant waste of money. Being in Ireland right now, i'm guessing you don't have a whole pile lying around.
Bring brown sauce and tea bags if you like them, you should be able to get most other food stuffs here. |

We have cleverly put most of our DVD collection on hard drives so have losts of DVDs and boxsets in small little hards with large capacities - thought it a good idea a while ago ! I believe you are on GEoje Island - I recognise you from a previous convo. What's the shops like for clothes there ? Travelling as a couple so we'll be interested in both lads and lady's clothes! |
