Guess i'm getting old. I've traded beer and ale for wine and whisky...well actually "Mad Men" got me started on whisky haha.
Although i've found some really good reds around the 50K-60K range the problem is i go back to the store they don't have it any more. It's like so many wines just disappear into thin air or come and go there's no rhyme or reason for it. Strange because the ones that are really good never seem to stick around but the cheapo table Chile table wine crap that they sell overpriced is consistently stocked. I guess it's about price?
I used to drink a lot of Johnnie Walker Red, Black, and Gold but after trying Singleton 18yr Glen Ord i really like it better. My friend thinks Macallan is better even than Singleton so i'm going to try that. Of course you could say there's inherent differences between blended and single malt but ultimately i just drink what tastes better.
Also on my list to try is Swing, Windsor XR. I also haven't tried the lower end Imperial or Ballentines yet. Any fellow W&W drinkers here? |

You really pay 50-60,000 for a bottle of wine?? That works out to about $10 a glass!!
Good wine is less than 10euro in Europe.......it shouldn't be much more here in today's global economy.......but in Korea you don't just pay the import duty on wine and whisky......you also pay the 'rich-taste tax' imposed by the retail market here......anything associated with good living here in Korea has it's price jacked up stupidly. |

I discovered that I really don't have a pallet for wines after a 3 day wine tour of central California. I honestly can't tell a massive difference in the nuances unless they're drastic, and I wish I could, it's something I hope will develop eventually but I'm not holding out hope.
Whiskey, on the other hand...I absolutely love! And like you, watching Mad Men really made me go back into scotch whiskey mode recently, so something about advertising must work. I'll have to give Singleton a try.
The only problem is I can really put away a lot of scotch whiskey, usually over half a bottle, before I need to stop for my own preservation. This of course makes it a rather expensive delight. |

Mad Men / Scotch Whisky disciple here, too.
How does the Singleton stack up to JWalk varieties price wise?

I have had Macallan quite a bit and I must say for the price it isnt worth it, it has to me a strange taste to it but I only seem to end up with the fine oak 18yrs.
My fav is by far this! it is a must for every scotch fan to try something a little different.
Glenfiddich Malt Scotch Whisky Liqueur
As for whisky I cant go past Johnny Walker Swing, or Chivas Regal 21 to be are the best value for quality...
But green label goes down just fine and always will!
as for red wine, I much prefer White and can't go past Oyster Bay (The best thing ever to come from New Zealand, well ofcourse besides my parents that is) |

I refuse to buy wine in Asia as the prices are outlandish. I saw South African wine here in China selling for about 80 rand, the same stuff back home costs 18 rand, that's an insane mark-up, for average wine too. |

Whiskey's pretty cheap in Japan. Cheaper than beer when it comes to getting drunk. I miss that.
What's with you lot emulating a TV show? Almost as bad as the ladies trying to live out Sex and the City. Cosmos!!! |

One of my Chinese friends who has good business connections in Shanghai and here in Australia exports wine (which I drink by the box here as he gives me a box whenever I want)...... He invites me to his place which is massive and drives 2 new bmws one being an M3...Anyway I can see how he got his money. He buys wine here at what he said one night after getting him completely wasted $5.60 and sells them in China for up to $100 Australian.
So I can understand why when I was in Asia I didnt drink much wine haha! |

I got a bottle of Imperial for my birthday a couple days ago, and I gotta say, I really wish the money had been spent on Johnnie Walker instead. But, for free whiskey, it's not that bad. |

I'm not a whiskey drinker, but I do like wine. I have seen a AUD$9-10 bottle retail here for W50,000. Prices here for wine means nothing-higher prices are no indication of quality. On the other hand, Lotte had a sale for months on a AUD $8 or so bottle of wine for W12,000 that dropped to man won for about a month. Generally, I find that a lot of the wines imported here are stuff I never see back home in North America and Aus. I have been told that swapping wine labels is fairly common here.
Now we go to Costco. Decent wines at the best prices I have seen while in Korea.
Someone please explain why Gato Negro gets sold at Lotte for like W18,000!!! |

I noticed that in Taiwan as well. I was in rural Taiwan and my family back in Aus are big wine drinkers so my friends parents told me to go down to the shops and pick some good Wine (saying obviously I know more than them because my parents drink the stuff haha). I was quite young still and I remember just looking at the wines going hmm why does everything have pictures of Iconic Australian things on the labels. I searched for 1 hour trying to find anything I knew of and only found one bottle of wolf blass by brand name covered in dust.
I asked the Chinese friend who sells about that time and he kept going on about getting exclusive deals (exclusive I doubt haha) with wine makers and how he can choose to change label designs etc to make it look more appealing overseas. For example one of his lines he buys has labels with gold and silver lining which makes it look more like an expensive champagne bottle rather than Wine but he tells me in China this shows this bottle is the top of the range for the brand he sells. I would have to say since he told me the price he pays per bottle the labels probably cost more than the wine. |

I can't as it is his Business and me getting him to tell me while he is drunk is not fair game. I was very interested since he pays his clients to come out to Australia for a week at the vineyards at Griffith (As much as I will tell haha).
It is funny when we catch up though as he makes out how hard his job is. Getting drunk with old Chinese men and pretending to sell something with passion and having to take them round like school kids as they speak little English. I am not sure he even likes wine. |

I went to a wine and whiskey store near me in Bundang about a year ago and asked for my regular, nothing special, whisky of choice...Jamesons.
He didn't have it but he looked up his suppliers order sheet (dozens of good whiskies listed there, btw) and said that he would get me in a few bottles.......he was true to his word.....I drop in about once a month for a bottle of very drinkable Jamesons for 30,000......pretty good deal for Korea.
Now he gives me the occasional freebie of half bottles of wine he's promoting.
I still don't buy his wine though.....shockingly overpriced. |
