I just spent a considerable amount of time looking into US mutual funds and if you have a US address and are a US citizen I would definitely go that route. Most are safe (I just invested in a blue chip growth fund) have far better rates of return than a savings account and allow you to open an account, invest etc online.
If you want info on what I looked at PM me, not sure if I can mention the companies I looked at. I will tell you a good research site is morningstar.com
