|

I'm looking to get a new winter jacket but don't really want to pay department store prices.
I occasionally stumble across sporting goods clearance shops like The North Face or Black Yak etc. and some have great deals. 40-60% off most items. Though I've only seen a couple of these places. Does anyone know of any good ones located around Seoul that have really good discounts like that?
I know of Mujeong-dong as well but it seems their best discounts are around 5-20%.
Thanks! |

keep your eyes open at E-mart. I got one last year, it was like a 1-2 day sale. One of those specials they have set up near the main entrance. It was 100K, very nice warm and comfy winter jacket. |

Out in the sticks it goes up to 90%.
I bought a pair of Helly Hansen snowboard pants for about 15,000 won.
If you take the bus towards Anseong from Nambu Terminal ask to be let off at the Daerim Dongsan 대림동산 stop.
It's 4,400 won for the ticket.
Across from the Lotte Mart you'll see the 90% signs. |

It never occurred to me they'd be selling fakes. All the gear looked exactly like the stuff in the department stores and it was a pretty legit looking outdoors shop.
anyone have any hints as to how to spot a fake? Or know if I should even be concerned about this? |

General rule of thumb in Asia is ... if it's not in a dept. store, and it's cheap, then it's surely a fake. But if the quality looks OK, and you don't want to hand it to your grand kids, then fakes will do the job.
Dept stores like Lotte etc never sell fakes - and you are getting the real deal (and paying for it - and all the hanger-on sales attendants too). |

Well they sell other brands there as well, and I've seen fake jackets before that are usually selling for 50$.
These jackets have all the usual tags (Gore-Tex, Polar-fleece etc) and are still around 250,000-300,000원. The store I'm referring to is by the Costco on Line 7.
I'm seeking a Gore-tex performance shell and I'll pick up a separate fleece or down for the inside. I might go for the Hyvent to save a few bucks.
As far as handing it down to my grand kids, I want to get a jacket that's going to stand up to what I'm going to throw it through. I'm not just going to stroll around Seoul in it so I do need functioning waterproofing, decent breathability and a decent amount of wind-stopping power.
I'm going to take a second look at these jackets in the store and see if I can get a feel for what they really are, I just hate the idea of dropping 5 bills on a shell!
Thanks for the advice. |

You won't beat quality if you're after performance. I own and run an adventure business, and I travelled (hitched) for years around the world.
I'm still using my trusty old ski jacket (that cost an absolute fortune - $300). That jacket kept me warm in an unheated student flat in NZ, it's been around the world with me twice (Himalays/ Tibet/ S. America) and now 4th Korean winter. I gotta admit though, I've repaired it a few times, and the zip has to be super glued each winter, and I guess it's getting pretty thin now, but hey, it's my jacket, and it cost $300 (plus the airmail cost of sending it home a few times). That jacket is 15 years old.
Now, I'd just buy a $40 rip off and put it the trash at the airport (on the way to warmer climes).
Good luck.

NorthFace doesn't discount in Korea. You can get the 5% discount for using the department credit card or you can go to an outlet shop and sometimes get 10% off if you ask and they are for some reason feeling generous. |

How do you know this for sure? The store I was at is apparently an authorized retailer. They are a "Young One" dealer that also carries The North Face. They have a pretty big selection of gear including tents and sleeping bags packs and boots. I honestly couldn't be more sure that these are all authentic. Proper tags inside and out. "The North Face" stamped and embossed on damn near every part of the gear. These are however last years models so I'm assuming that's why they are 40% off.
If they are fake I would be upset and really really surprised... |

you should buy a motorcycle jacket
those things are surprisingly warm
warmer than my north face goretex jacket i brought to korea from canada
like when i'm riding my new bike, i can't even feel the wind
but it isn't ridiculously cold yet so who knows when it hits minus 10
but i personally feel a motorcycle jacket and a facemask was warmer than my $300+ northface goretex jacket and my down polo puffy jacket
those things don't seem that invincible vs the cold |

you want a jacket to last 5 years?
then buy an expensive one.. I mean its an investment in your well being.
you want a jacket just for the winter in Korea? ITAEWON has plenty of crappy jackets where the feathers will start falling out by next winter.. but for 50 bucks what do you want?
through it away in spring, and buy a new one next winter, least you wont be the guy with the same winter jacket for the next 4 years... |

Don't forget Kolon. The name conjures up unpleasant images, but I think it's the best Korean brand going around. I walked into a Kolon store recently and picked up a 40% off shell. |
