|
|
This was all my kids could talk about yesterday. I had several of them remind me that today is Pepero Day and ask if I was bringing some for them (hah!). I know that 빼빼로 are those Pocky-like cookies sold in Family Mart, but why exactly is there a special day for it? Is it some sort of school celebration or an example of consumerism at its best (like Valentine's Day)? Inquiring minds want to know.... |

Today's date 11/11. Looks like Pepero sticks. Corporate-created holiday. Fun. That is all. |

Consumerism and shameless marketing at its finest!!
Give your special someone some of our Hello Kitty Peppero Sticks from our special cartoon Peppero line to show them you love them. It's not love if it's not Peppero! |

It's a teenager invented day that caught fire a while back, I think it was about a decade ago. Supposedly it started with just a group of friends and then spread from there, I'm sure Lotte was somehow involved in it's spread. As for why it's on Nov 11th, well I guess 11/11 looks like a bunch of pepero sticks or something.
Basically it just a day of consumerism a kin to Valentine's Day and any of the "Hallmark" days back in North America like: Mother's Day and Father's Day. I wouldn't be surprised if as much as 30% of Pepero sales are made in November. |

i wouldn't worry about bringing stuff for the kids; if they ask, just ask them where their peppero to you are.
in the 3 public schools i've taught at, usually the kids are the ones bringing peppero for the teachers. by the way, i just got my first present of the day... but it's a chocolate bar (?). |

There was one outfit which tried to promote March 3 as triangular kimbap day.
Apparently, that didn't go over too well.
I bet Peppero Day will be even bigger next year, because that will be 11/11/11.
I wouldn't be too surprised if all the church bells and fire sirens go off at 11:11 AM and 11:11 PM. |

It was apparently started by highschool girls who bought them for their friends while saying "may you grow as tall and thin as a Pepero". Now it's the greatest consumerist holiday ever - There's a girl freezing her butt off outside our closest Family Mart right now dancing with a giant box of them. Well done, Lotte, well done. |

Last year, I heard a student choked on one of those large pepero stick and died. So no pepero for my school. |

Just think how many warehouses in Incheon must be stacked to the ceiling with boxes of stale breadstick coated in chemical chocolate in anticipation of this momentous day. |

Korea has far more cutesy couple days than North America. in NA you got valentine's day and that's it Korea gets you Valentines, White day, Peppero day, journal day, (that's in january I think) and there might be one more. A few other candy manufacturers have tried to push days, chupa chips is one of them, but they've never gained any traction.
I think they're trying too hard. |

My student says there's "Kiss Day", on which couples crowd together in Myeongdong and kiss. Funny. |
